The city of Maribor before the Second World War, and Maribor after its liberation mark the period in which the film Cafe Astoria is set. The story relates with a gentle melancholy and a slight irony the lives of a middle-class family: the cafe owner, his wife and their son. Through their individual destinies we become acquainted with the social and historical background of a by-gone era; the social and national differences of pre-war Maribor, divisions among the wealthy and poor, and nationally minded Slovenes and fanatic Germanophils. The first year after the war introduced the absurd characteristic cruel measures of the so-called revolutionary social transformations in which calamity and coincidence intervene, resulting in events of comic nature, of course, as seen from a safe distance of fifty years.
1905년 러시아 우크라이나 지방의 작은 마을 유태인 부락에서 우유가공업으로 생계를 유지하는 테비에는 가난한 삶에도 불구하고 신앙심이 깊은 남자다. 그는 수다스런 아내 고르데와 다섯 명의 딸들과 함께 행복하게 살아간다. 그러던 중 장녀 짜이텔이 아버지와 상의도 없이 양복점 직공을 사랑한다며 그와 결혼을 하겠다고 한다. 전통을 존중하는 테비에는 별로 내키지 않았지만 딸 아이의 의지를 꺾을 수 없는 처지라 결혼을 승낙하고 만다. 그런데 결혼식이 열리는 식장으로 러시아 경관이 들이닥쳐 식장은 수라장이 되고 만다. 러시아 혁명의 바람이 불기 시작했던 것. 우여곡절 끝에 장녀의 결혼을 마쳤더니 이번에는 둘째딸이 가난한 밀본과 결혼을 하겠다고 하더니, 또 셋째까지 러시아 청년과 사랑에 빠져서는 몰래 도망쳐버린다. 그러는 와중에도 러시아의 정국은 더욱 악화되고, 그 여파는 아나태프카의 마을에도 밀어닥친다. 유태인 퇴거명령이 떨어진 것. 결국 테비에를 비롯한 유태인들은 정든 땅을 버리고 미국에서의 재회를 약속하며 마을을 떠나간다.
세계 2차 대전이 끝난 직후, 이탈리아의 어느 작은 마을. 그곳에는 미란다 라는 젊고 아름다운 여인이 운영하는 지노라는 여관이 있다. 남편 지노는 전쟁 중 행방불명 돼 그녀의 주위엔 그녀의 아름다운 여체를 즐기려는 늑대 같은 남자들이 득실댄다. 마을의 남자들은 서로 정력적인 남성미와 세련된 매너, 이국적인 분위기로 그녀에게 접근해 오지만 오히려 미란다는 자신의 육체를 미끼로 챙길 건 다 챙기면서 남편에 대한 정절만은 굳게 지켜나간다. 결국 주위의 남자들은 하나 둘씩 다 떠나가고 유일하게 그녀 곁에 남아 그녀를 보살피는 토니에게 미란다는 마음이 흔들리는데…
매력이 있고 재력도 있는 아버지 루이스(Louis Batiste: 사무엘 L. 잭슨 분), 그 누구보다 아름다운 엄마 로즈(Roz Batiste: 린 휘트필드 분), 언니 시슬리(Cisely Batiste: 미간 굿 분) 그리고 남동생과 함께 살고 있는 이브(Eve Batiste: 저니 스몰렛 분)는 열 살된 소녀이다. 집에서 파티가 열리던 날, 아버지가 언니하고만 춤을 추는데 화가 난 이브는 창고로 갔다가 그 곳에서 잠이 든다. 이상한 소리에 잠을 깬 이브는 아버지가 같은 마을의 모로 부인(Matty Mereaux: 리사 니콜 카슨 분)과 섹스하는 모습을 보게 된다. 충격을 받은 이브를 달래며 아버지는 앞으로 파티에서 이브하고만 춤을 출 것이라 약속하면서 이브에게 아무에게도 말하지 않겠다고 다짐을 받는다. 하지만, 이브는 언니 시슬리에게 말하게 되고 아빠를 유난히 사랑하는 시슬리는 그 예기를 듣고 충격에 빠지고 분노한다. 미래를 예견하는 능력을 가진 고모 모젤(Mozelle Batiste Delacroix: 데비 모간 분)은 이브가 예사롭지 않다고 생각하고 이브의 생각을 보려 하지만 다른 사람과는 달리 이브의 내면 세계는 보이질 않는다. 이브는 몰랐지만 이미 대부분의 어른들은 아버지가 바람둥이라는 사실을 알고 있고, 엄마 역시 그것 때문에 힘들어한다. 어느날 시장에 간 엄마와 고모는 싸구려 점쟁이에게 점을 보는데 엄마는 3년간 아이들을 잘 보살펴야 한다는 말을 듣는다. 엄마는 이브 남매들을 집안에만 두려하고 그 일로 인해 아빠와 마찰도 빚는다. 유난히 아빠와 친하던 시슬리는 엄마에게 반항하고, 폭풍우가 몰아치던 그날 밤, 아빠와 엄마는 심하게 싸우는데...
