크리스마스 기분에 들뜬 작은 마을에 더들리(캐리 그랜트 분)라는 신사가 찾아온다. 더들리는 하늘 나라에서 온 천사로 자신을 필요로 하는 사람들 앞에 나타나 그들을 돕고 용기를 준다. 이 마을 주교로 있는 헨리(데이빗 니븐 분)는 대성당을 건설하려는 사업을 추진하지만 뜻대로 성금이 모아지지 않아 초조해 하며 하나님께 도움을 요청한다. 그런 헨리의 기도를 듣고 그 앞에 나타난 더들리는 자신이 하늘 나라에서 온 천사임을 밝히고 그를 도와 줄 것을 약속한다. 한편 헨리의 부인인 줄리아(로레타 영 분)는 헨리가 대성당 건설 사업을 시작한 이후로 옛 친구들과 동료들을 멀리하고 가족을 소홀히 대한다는 사실을 안타까워한다. 그러던 어느 날, 헨리가 대성당 기금 마련을 위해 해밀톤 부인(글래디스 쿠퍼 분)을 만나러 간 사이에 더들리와 줄리아는 스케이트장을 찾아 즐거운 한때를 보낸다. 그 곳에서 줄리아는 더들리와 함께 있으면 무엇이든 가능해지고 즐거워진다는 사실에 그에게서 야릇한 감정을 느끼게 되는데...
