뱀의 유전자 실험을 하던 미 국방부 바이러스 연구소는 테러리스트들의 습격으로 인해 뱀 프로젝트를 포기하고 만다. 시간이 흐른 후 산타마리아에 가벼운 지진이 발생하고 이상한 증상을 보이는 환자가 나타난다. 이 병은 빠른게 전염되고 병원 의사인 데이빗은 혈액 샘플을 채취해 이혼한 아내인 크리스틴에 분석을 의뢰한다. 한편 국방부 바이러스 연구소 연구원인 크리스틴은 혈액 샘플 내에 정체불명의 바이러스를 발견하고 상부에 보고한다. 크리스틴은 상부가 나서서 이번 바이러스에 대한 조사와 산타마리아의 방역을 요구하지만 상부는 크리스틴의 요구를 거절하고 데이빗이 보낸 두 번째 혈액 샘플을 바꿔치기하며 이 사실을 은폐하려고 한다. 두 번째 혈액 샘플을 분석하던 크리스틴은 대장균을 발견하고 데이빗에게 대장균이 발견됐다고 말하지만 데이빗은 이 사실을 알리지 않는다. 이 와중에 산타마리아에 또 지진이 일어나고 크리스틴은 산타마리아로 직접 떠난다. 산타마리아에 도착한 크리스틴은 뱀이 바이러스를 감염시키는 원인이라는 데이빗의 말을 듣고 이상하게 생각하지만 뱀에 물린 환자를 보고 그 사실을 믿는다. 또한 뱀들이 도시에 많이 나타나는 현상이 지진과 관계가 있다는 설명을 듣고 뱀을 직접 잡아 독즙을 뽑아 이것을 이용해 백신을 만들기로 결정한다. 크리스틴은 연구를 하던 도중 지진이 일어나자 실수로 바이러스에 감염되고 마침 뱀을 생포해 온 데이빗은 뱀의 독을 이용해 만든 해독제로 크리스틴을 치료하는 데 성공한다.

The Morgans, a loving and strong family of Black sharecroppers in Louisiana in 1933, face a serious family crisis when the husband and father, Nathan Lee Morgan, is convicted of a petty crime and sent to a prison camp. After some weeks or months, the wife and mother, Rebecca Morgan, sends the oldest son, who is about 11 years old, to visit his father at the camp. The trip becomes something of an odyssey for the boy. During the journey he stays a little while with a dedicated Black schoolteacher.

His mother is religious, sympathetic to the Fascists; his father is accused of being a Red. Fando discovers that his mother may have aided in his father's arrest. Sometimes we witness Fando imagining explanations for what's going on; sometimes we see him at play, alone or with his friend Thérèse. Oedipal fantasies and a lad's natural curiosity about sex and death mix with his search for his mother's nature and his father's fate. Will Fando survive the search?

청각장애인을 부모로 둔 체이니(제임스 캐그니 분)는 극장에서 판토마임과 막간 사이의 촌극 연기자로 일하고 있었다. 그러던 어느 날, 클레바 클라이튼(도로시 말론 분)을 만난 체이니는 그녀를 조수로 채용하게 된다. 함께 일하면서 사랑에 빠진 두 사람은 결혼까지 하게 되지만 체이니가 자신의 양친이 청각장애인이라는 사실을 밝히자, 클레바는 혐오감을 감추지 않는다. 심지어는 아들을 낳고 나서도 아기가 청각 장애일 거라며 쳐다보지도 않으려 한다. 아기가 정상이었음에도 클레바는 불안 증세를 보였고, 체이니가 극장에서 성공을 거듭할수록 그녀의 증세는 더해간다. 결국 클레바는 체이니와 어린 아들을 남겨두고 집을 나가버리고, 체이니는 부양할 돈이 없어 아들마저 다른 가정에 빼앗기고 만다. 결국 체이니는 아들을 되찾겠다는 일념으로 헐리우드를 행한다. 그 곳에서 그는 자신의 재능을 이용해 할 수 있는 일이라면 무엇이든 서슴지 않고 모두 다 해낸다.
