Why is silence so hard to deal with? Why is it so much easier for us to live our lives with a lot of things going on all the time than to just be in silence? We're constantly surrounded with "voices" that are influencing us on how to think, feel, and behave. Movies, music, TV, Internet, cell phones, and a never-ending barrage of advertising. There's always something going on. Always noise in our lives. But maybe there's a connection between the amount of noise in our lives and our inability to hear God. If God sometimes feels distant to us, maybe it's not because he's not talking to us, but simply because we aren't really listening.

어린시절부터 눈 앞에서 헛 것이 보이는 딜런(마이클 스탈-데이빗)은 동네 친구들과의 나쁜 짓으로 인해 복역 후 가석방으로 출소하게 된다. 성인이 된 후에도 여전히 헛 것이 보이는 딜런. 그것이 왜인지도 모른채 남모를 고민을 안고 살아가던 어느날 운전 중 갑자기 일어난 헛 것이 보이는 증상때문에 교통사고 날 뻔한다. 그때 갑자기 그전에는 보이기만 하던 증상에서 목소리까지 들리기 시작하고, 딜런은 드디어 자신이 미쳤다고 생각하게 된다. 하지만 상대방 역시 자신의 목소리가 들리는 것을 알게 된 딜런. 자신을 뉴 햄프셔에 살고 있는 레베카(조 카잔)이라 밝힌 그녀의 정체가 어린시절 자신을 기절하게 만든 그 아이임을 알게된다. 레베카 역시 딜런과 같은 증상으로 인해, 주변에서 미친 사람 취급을 받으며 성장한 과거가 있던 차라 자신과 똑같은 딜런에게 무언가의 통함을 느끼게 된다. 그렇게 두 사람은 텔레파시를 통해 서로에 대해 알아가며, 각자의 선을 넘을 듯 말 듯한 야릇하고도 이상한 데이트를 하게 되는데...

자뻑지존, 똘끼충만 맷은 영화처럼 살기를 꿈꾸는 영화광이자 10대 고딩감독이다. 절친 오웬과 함께 학교 일진들을 소재로 영화를 만들고 있는 그는 지금까지 보아왔던 영화들의 온갖 멋진 장면을 흉내 내면서, 실제상황과 극영화 기법을 넘나들며 작업 중이다. 그는 영화 "다크나이트"의 ‘조커’, "존 말코비치되기"의 여장 남자 가수, "호밀밭의 파수꾼", "스타워즈", "유주얼 서스펙트", "배트맨" 등 수많은 영화의 장면들을 인용하고, 게러지 밴드 “베스트 코스트”의 음악으로 오웬과 함께 출연한 뮤직비디오를 삽입하는 등 10대 소년 감독으로서의 꿈과 열정을 여과 없이 반영한다. 오웬이 같은 학교 친구 크리스와 사랑에 빠지게 되면서 두 사람은 영화 찍기와 더불어 사랑을 위한 작전을 펼치고, 영화 수업 교사인 멀든의 반대에 부딪쳐 원하는 방향으로 영화제작을 하지 못하는 상황이 되기도 하지만 그 무엇도, 그 누구도 맷의 열정과 꿈을 꺾을 수 없다.
