켄터키주 작은 광산촌에서 광부의 딸로 태어난 로레타(Loretta Lynn: 시시 스펙 분)는 14살 때 조금은 불량스럽지만 그런 대로 활동적인 청년 둘리틀(Doolittle "Mooney" Lynn: 토미 리 존스 분)를 만나 갑자기 결혼을 하게 된다. 어린 나이의 신부, 10살이상 차이가 나는 남편과의 결혼 생활은 주위의 예상대로 순탄하지 못해 헤어지고 또 만나고 하는 생활을 반복하게 된다. 하지만 그것도 잠시 두 사람 사이에 아이들이 생기면서 평범한 부부가 된 로레타와 둘리틀은 켄터키를 떠나 다른 지방에 정착 해서 그럭 저럭 살아간다. 그러던 중 로레타의 생일날 남편 둘리틀이 전당포에서 중고 기타를 생일 선물로 로레타에게 사다 주게 되고 그 기타를 연주하던 로레타는 자신에게 숨은 재능, 즉 노래 솜씨가 있다는 사실을 알게 된다. 남편 둘리틀의 격려 속에 마을회관 무대에 오른 로레타는 멋진 노래를 선보이고 자작곡 "I'm A Honky Tonk Girl"을 만든 로레타는 남편 둘리틀과 함께 미국 남부를 돌면서 가수로서 데뷔하려 한다. 계속되는 여행과 방송국 순방을 통해 어럽게 가요계의 문을 두드리던 두사람, 이들의 노력은 헛되지 않아 드디어 로레타의 노래가 인기 차트에 오르게 된다. 로레타는 스타의 길을 향해 한 걸음 한걸음 올라가고, 마침내 칸츄리 가수들이 꿈에 그리는 무대 그랜드 올 오프리 무대에까지 서게 된다. 그러나.

광산 노조 운동이 아직 자리를 잡지못한 1920년. 노조가 아직 결성되지 못한 메이트완에서 파업이 일어난다. 사장은 이탈리아 주민들과 흑인으로 구성된 노조 파괴자들을 모집해 온다. 여기에 섞여서 조 캐너핸이라는 세계 산업 노동조합에서 파견된 노동운동 지도자가 온다. 그는 메이트완에서 노동자들이 자신들의 정당한 권리를 찾을 수 있도록 도와준다. 그리고 노동자들 사이에서 분열이 생겼을 때 그 분열을 단합으로 만들기 위해 노력한다. 그는 자본에 매수된 다른 노조원에게 모함을 받기도 하고 테러를 당하기도 한다. 하지만 그와 다른 조합원들의 노력으로 노조 파괴자들도 노조에 가입하고 파업은 최고조에 달한다. 노동자와 자본가간의 대립이 계속되던 중 조합원인 할라드가 석탄을 훔치다 살해당하는 사건이 발생하고 긴장이 고조된다. 사용자측은 볼드윈 탐정 사무소를 통해 사람을 사들이고 마을에서의 총격전으로 이를 말리려던 캐너핸과 시장 등이 죽고 이후 유명한 석탄 전쟁이 시작된다.

1909년 영국 요크셔(Yorkshire, England). 데이브와 토미는 엠스데일이라는 작은 탄광촌에서 탄광 사고로 아빠를 잃고 루크라는 새 아빠와 살고 있다. 엠스데일에서는 석탄을 나르는 말들을 쓰고 있는데, 데이브와 토미는 그 중에서도 일 잘하는 플래쉬를 제일 좋아한다. 그러던 중 새로운 광산 감독이 오고 그는 광산의 적자를 해소하기 위해 말들을 없애고 석탄을 운반하는 기계를 들여놓기로 한다. 그에게는 알리스라는 데이브 또래의 딸이 하나 있다. 말들이 도살장으로 보내질 거라는 이야기를 들은 셋은 말들을 구해내기로 하고 폐쇄된 갱도를 통해 말을 꺼내온다. 한편 광부들은 말들을 없앤다는 소리에 자신들의 생계를 걱정하게 되고 급기야는 파업을 하게 된다. 하지만 파업이 계속되면 광산이 문을 닫을 거라는 말에 작업에 복귀한 날 폭발사고가 생기고 갱도에 갇힌 사람들은 영리한 플래쉬의 도움으로 무사히 구출된다. 플래쉬는 빠져나오지 못한 채 탄광에서 숨을 거둔다. 이에 광산 주인은 자신의 땅을 말들을 위한 목장으로 내놓고 모든 마을 사람들이 모여 파티를 하는데...

Glace Bay, Nova Scotia Canada, 1901. Willie MacLean is a 10-year-old boy with a love for horses and liking to school to cape the difficult times his family has. Willie's stern, but benevolent father is a coal miner in a local mine along with his older brother John. But when Willie's father is injured and John is killed in an accident at the mine, Willie is forced to step into his brother's shoes to support his older sister Nelle, and two younger sisters until their father recovers. Willie soon finds work at the mine lonely (aka: the pit) and unfriendly in which he forms a bond with a pit pony horse in order to make it though each day.

In July of 2019 the Blackjewel coal company announced it was declaring bankruptcy. Miners were told to stop working mid shift, and their last paychecks bounced. The miners retaliated by blocking a train full of coal, camping out on the coal tracks for weeks. Queer regional organizers made their way to the encampment to support the miners. The encampment became a place for community gathering and mutual aid distribution. Sarah Moyer, a film maker living in Kentucky, also made their way to the encampment and filmed this short documentary on the blockade. (Summary from Queer Appalachia)
