영화적 리얼리즘의 새로운 영토를 개척한 영화로 평가된다. 다양한 유형의 인물들을 통해 전쟁 중의 황량한 물질적, 육체적 조건들이 사실적인 모습으로 묘사되고 있다. 1943년 연합군이 시실리에 상륙했을 때를 시작으로 시간과 공간이 모두 상향 이동된 여섯 개의 에피소드들로 구성되어 있으며, 이 에피소드들은 모두 전쟁의 의미가 고통과 죽음뿐이라는 메시지를 전달한다. 2차 대전 말기, 연합군이 이탈리아 남부에 상륙하여 독일군을 차례로 격퇴시키며 북부로 진격해 올라가는 과정에서 있었던 여러 가지 사건들을 다룬 작품. 로셀리니는 여기서 군인, 민간인, 레지스탕스, 그리고 수도원의 수도사들 등 다양한 인물군상을 등장시켜 특정한 역사적 국면에 놓여 있던 특정한 공간의 사람들에 대한 완벽한 프레스코화를 그려내는 데 성공했다.
