A new film compiled from the BFI National Archive's unparalleled holdings of early films of China, features films from 1900-48 filmed across China. The cinematic journey of Around China with a Movie Camera contains many films which may never have been seen in China, or at the very least not for over 70 years. These travelogues, newsreels and home movies were made by a diverse group of British and French filmmakers, some professionals, but mainly enthusiastic amateurs, including intrepid tourists, colonial-era expatriates and Christian missionaries.
중국의 가난한 농부 왕룽(폴 무니 분)은 노예 출신의 여자 아란(루이즈 레이너)과 결혼한다. 기근이 닥치자 왕룽은 가족들을 데리고 일자리를 찾아 도시로 이사한다. 아란은 왕룽과 함께 힘든 생활을 견디고 혁명을 겪지만 돈을 모아 가족을 이끌고 다시 고향으로 돌아온다. 토지를 조금씩 사들여 드디어 부자가 된 왕룽. 그러나 그는 조금씩 방탕해지고 드디어 젊은 여자를 첩으로 맞아들이며 집안은 혼란에 빠진다. 왕룽의 집안은 젊은 첩과 장성한 아들로 인해 불화가 끊이지 않지만 왕룽의 아내 아란은 결코 흔들리지 않는다. 그 와중에 메뚜기 떼가 마을을 습격하여 왕룽 일가를 궁지로 몰아넣는데…

30년대 상해에 사는 ‘모’는 사진관을 경영하는 편모 슬하의 18세 소녀이다. 맹사장을 만난 후 일생의 운명이 변하게 되고 그녀는 스타가 됨과 동시에 맹사장이 아이를 임신하게 되지만 그에게 버림을 받으며 사생아 딸에게 ‘리’라는 이름을 지어준다. 60년대에 살고 있는 '리'의 마음은 언제나 음침한 집을 떠나는 것이다. 그녀는 시멘트 공장 공원인 조우지에와 결혼하고 아이를 낳기로 결정하지만 출산이 불가능하다고 하여 복지원에서 여자아이를 데리고 양녀로 삼게되고 '화'라는 이름을 지어준다. 삶에 회의를 갖은 그녀는 모든 것을 버리고 집을 나간다. 여성들의 권위가 바로 세워진 80년대의 ‘화'는 샤오투 라는 남자를 만나 그와 결혼을 하고 임신하지만 오래 지나지 않아 샤오투에게 정부가 있는 것을 발견하고 단호히 이혼을 제기함과 동시에 아이를 낳게 된다. 3대에 걸친 여인들의 삶을 중국 역사와 오버랩시키며 감독은 여성들의 삶과 독립에 대해 진지하게 관객에게 보여주고 있다. 2004 제7회 상해 국제 영화제 심사위원 대상.
