Flame in the Wind (1971)

궁중화가 고야의 아름다운 모델이자 영원한 뮤즈 이네스는 부당한 누명을 쓰고 종교재판소에 갇히게 된다. 이네스의 아버지인 부유한 상인 토마스는 딸을 구하기 위해 성당 재건 비용 기부 등 백방으로 노력한다. 이를 구실로 고야와 로렌조 신부를 집에 초대한다. 이네스가 부당한 심문에 자백 한 사실을 듣게 되고, 토마스는 어이없는 강변을 늘어놓는 로렌조를 심문한다. 로렌조에게 종교재판소를 모독하는 강제 고백의 고해문서를 받아낸 그는 심문의 고통은 이성을 마비시키고 허위고백을 할 수 있다는 것을 증명하려 한다.

교회를 공격한 죄로 종교 재판에 회부되기 위해 투옥된 세르반테스(피터 오툴)가 감옥 안에서 죄수들에게 배역을 주어 이야기를 상연 하게 되는데...세르반테스는 준비해온 옛 갑옷과 투구를 챙겨 입고 가면을 쓴 채 돈키호테가 되어 영원한 하인 산초 함께 불가능한 꿈을 꾸면서 무사 수업을 떠나게 된다. 여행도중 거대한 풍차를 보고 악한 거인으로 보고 칼을 뽑아 들고 정면으로 돌진하며 공격하는 상황이나 시골주막을 큰 성으로 착각하고 그 곳에서 일하는 창녀 알돈자(소피아 로렌)를 이상적인 둘시네아 공녀로 받드는 상황들은 모두 세르반테스가 상연하는 판타지다.

인류의 태초부터 시작되는 세계사의 주요 장면들을 멜 브룩스가 일인다역으로 출연해 코믹 터치로 그린 독특한 작품. 2부 예고편이 나오지만 2부는 없다.

때는 종교재판이 행해지던 1492년 스페인. 빵을 구워 생계를 이어가는 금슬 좋은 부부 안토니오(Antonio: 조나단 풀러 분)와 마리아(Maria: 로나 디 리치 분)는 빵을 팔러 성안으로 들어간다. 그러나 마녀 화형식에 방해가 되었다는 이유로 집행관의 눈에 띈 마리아가 감옥에 갇히고 만다. 교주와 수도승들이 지켜보는 가운데 마리아는 마녀 재판이라는 허울 아래 옷을 벗기우고 몸을 수색당하는 웃지 못할 치욕스러운 일을 당한다. 수도승들에 의해 마녀라는 자백을 강요당하는 고문을 받던 중 마리아는 교주에게 불려간다. 아리따운 마리아의 모습에 성욕을 가누지 못하는 교주는 아내를 구하러 성안에 침입했다 붙잡힌 남편 안토니오가 고문을 당하는 모습을 보여주면서 그를 풀어주겠다는 조건으로 마리아의 몸을 요구한다. 하지만 금욕적인 자기학대로 인한 성불능 탓에 자신의 욕망을 채우지 못하자 그는 마리아의 혀를 자른다. 한편, 며칠 동안을 마리아와 함께 감옥에서 같이 있었던 할머니의 화형식이 거행된다. 그녀는 자신이 마녀라고 큰 소리로 외쳐대며 교주와 구경꾼들에게 저주를 퍼붓고는 하늘을 향해 마리아를 회생시켜 달라는 기도와 함께 처참히 살해된다.

In 1543, at the University of Salamanca, in Spain, Fray Antonio Román, an Augustinian monk who spreads humanist ideas, considered heretical, among his more inquisitive students, a clandestine group of four led by the brilliant novice Luis de León, mysteriously dies in unspeakable circumstances.
