캘리포니아에 가서 결혼 생활을 하려던 제니와 워런은 결혼식을 하려고 마차를 타고 가다 슬레이튼이란 무법자에게 강도를 당해 워런은 총에 맞아 쓰러지고 제니는 납치를 당한다. 여자를 끌고 가는 걸 못마땅하게 여기던 동료 제스는 슬레이튼에게 반항하다 사막에 묶이게 된다. 그러나 죽은 줄 알았던 워런은 죽지 않고 슬레이튼을 쫓고 이 와중에 제스와 슬레이튼에게 원한을 가지고 있는 인디언을 만나 함께 가게 된다. 결국 슬레이튼은은 여자와 제스를 맞바꾸자고 제안을 하고 워런은 그의 말에 따르지만 슬레이튼은 제스를 죽이고 이에 격분한 워런은 그를 끝까지 쫓아가 죽인다.

세 명의 여자들이 여름 별장에서 같이 휴가를 보내면서 그녀들의 남편들이 돌아오기를 기다린다. 그녀들은 과거에 있었던 결혼 생활의 상처들을 회상하면서 서로를 위로하는데... 첫 번째 회상자 라켈은 성적으로 만족스럽지 못한 결혼 생활을 하던 중 그녀의 전 애인이었던 카이(얄 쿨레 분)와 야외 사우나에서 사랑을 나누다 남편에게 들켰던 일을 얘기한다. 골동품 수집가인 그녀의 남편이 감정적으로 움츠러든 상태에서 그 현장을 목격한 것이다. 그리고 그는 정원의 오두막으로 물러나서 자살할 것을 결심한다. 그러나 그의 형은 부인이 없는 것보다는 부정한 부인이라도 있는 것이 낫다면서 그의 자살 충동을 단념시킨다. 이 에피소드의 화자는 이상하게도 그녀의 남편이 어린 아이와 다르지 않음을 보여준다. 두 번째 에피소드는 마따 부인의 연애담이다. 그녀는 온 가족의 반대를 무릅쓰고 파리의 예술가와 결혼을 감행해서 아기를 낳은 이야기를 한다. 이 이야기에서는 생생한 출산 장면도 재현된다. 세 번째 에피소드는 코믹한 요소가 강한 이야기로 베리히만 감독의 단골 배우인 에바 달벡과 군나르 변스트란드가 감정적으로 소원해진 부부로 등장한다. 사이가 멀어져 있었던 이들 부부가 어느 날 엘리베이터에 갇힘으로써 그들의 사랑이 다시 불타게 된다.

1970년대 할렘에서 살고 있는 ‘티시’와 ‘포니’ 어린 시절부터 친구였던 둘은 연인으로 발전하며 함께하는 미래를 꿈꾼다. 하지만, ‘포니’가 단지 흑인이라는 이유로 강간사건의 용의자가 되며 억울하게 체포되고 ‘포니’의 무죄를 입증하기 위해 ‘티시’와 그녀의 가족들은 고군분투한다. 사건발생 당시 ‘포니’와 함께 있었던 친구 ‘대니얼’을 통해 알리바이를 입증하려 하지만 ‘대니얼’ 역시 흑인이라는 이유로 억울한 누명을 쓴 전과자. 티시의 어머니인 ‘샤론’ 역시 딸의 행복을 위해 ‘포니’를 용의자로 지목했던 ‘로저스’를 설득하러 푸에르토리코까지 떠나지만 그녀는 사건의 후유증으로 그 누구와도 대화하지 않으려 한다. ‘포니’의 무죄입증은 갈수록 어려워져만 가는데…
