브라질의 리우에서 살아가는 열네 살 소년 라파엘과 가르도는 어느 날 우연히 쓰레기 더미에서 지갑을 발견하게 된다. 뜻밖의 행운에 기뻐한 것도 잠시, 곧 경찰이 들이닥쳐 어마어마한 현상금을 걸며 지갑을 수소문하고, 지갑에 중요한 무언가가 있음을 직감한 두 친구는 하수구에 사는 일명 ‘들쥐’에게 지갑을 맡긴다. 라파엘, 가르도, 들쥐의 수상한 낌새를 눈치챈 경찰은 세 소년을 쫓기에 이르고, 아이들은 지갑을 둘러싼 비밀을 밝혀내기 위해 수수께끼를 풀어나가기 시작하는데…….

어릴 적 탐사를 위해 아버지와 함께 네스 호에 갔다가 거대한 공룡에게 공격 당해 상처를 입고 아버지마저 잃게 된 제임스는 커서 미지생물학자가 되어 평생 네스 호의 괴물의 뒤를 쫓는다. 수십 년 후 작은 호수가 있는 미국의 작은 산골 마을 애쉬번의 호수에서 네스 호의 괴물을 목격했다고 주장하는 사람이 나타난다. 제임스는 그 괴물의 정체를 밝히고, 아버지의 복수를 하기 위해 애쉬번을 찾는다. 한편 마을에서는 사람들이 심하게 훼손 된 시체로 발견되고 제임스는 이가 네스호의 괴물 네시의 소행임을 알게 된다. 산란기가 되어 새끼들을 낳아 마을 사람들을 위협하고 공포에 떨게 하는 네시. 제임스는 보안관의 아들인 미끼가게 주인 조쉬와 함께 네시를 잡으려 한다. 제임스는 과연 식인 공룡으로부터 마을 사람들을 지키고 아버지의 복수를 할 수 있을까.

장프랑수아 밀레의 <이삭 줍는 사람들>이라는 그림에서 시작해 추수가 끝난 대지에 남아 있는 농산물이나 과일들을 줍는 사람들, 개펄에서 조개를 줍는 사람들, 도시의 쓰레기통에서 주운 음식들만 먹고 살아가는 사람들, 그리고 버려진 물건들을 모아서 작품을 만드는 재활용 미술가에 이르기까지 다양한 장소에서 다양한 대상들을 수집하는 사람들의 모습들이 보여진다. 쓸모 없어 보이는 파편더미들 속에서 새로운 가치와 진실들이 발견되기도 하고, 무의미한 대상들이 놀라운 예술작품으로 변모하는 과정이 펼쳐진다. 아녜스 바르다는 마치 일기를 쓰듯이 정겹고 주관적인 형식으로 영화를 구성해 간다. 버려진 것들을 주워서 살아갈 수밖에 없는 가난한 촌부나 도시의 홈리스 등에 대한 묘사가 프랑스 사회 내부의 모순들을 간접적으로 드러내고 있다면, 재활용 미술가나 환경운동가와 같은 사람들의 목소리를 통해서는 현대 사회의 과도하고 무분별한 소비성이 비판되기도 한다.
