Joy in the World (2016)

Piotr Tymochowicz, media advisor to some of Poland's top politicians, claims that anybody can be molded into a charismatic leader. To prove it he's looking for a greenhorn that can be turned into a candidate. A call is put out for would-be participants, and hundreds apply. A small group is selected and under go training. Polish master Marcel Lozinksi followed Tymochowicz and this project for three years, and this beautifully shot and edited work paints a compelling portrait of cynical (and quite familiar) demagogy and populism in action.

The young woman, Leah, is promised to another man, but Channon, the son of the father who died, is a practitioner of mysticism, and seeks to win his bride through sorcery.

밀라와 하비어는 둘 다 실력 있는 심장외과 의사로 같은 병원에서 근무하는 부부이다. 결혼 10년 차임에도 그들은 여전히 열렬히 사랑하며 음주 가무를 즐기며 가끔은 철부지 같은 일탈을 즐기며 산다. 하지만, 하비어는 술이 문제다. 그런 음주 문제로 인해 수술에서 제외되며 정직기를 보내게 된 하비어. 그리고 생각지도 못한 임신을 알게 된 밀라. 둘만의 자유와 행복을 원하며, 아이로 인해 제약받는 삶을 두려워했던 밀라는 낙태를 생각한다. 하지만, 아이를 원하는 하비어의 뜻을 받아들여 아이를 낳기로 하고 변화를 위해 남미로 가려던 계획도 뒤로 미루게 된다. 시간이 갈수록 하비어의 술버릇이 판단의 중심을 갉아먹으며 점점 질투심이 많고 소유욕이 강하고 무책임한 생각을 하게 된다. 그러면서 밀라, 하비어 이 둘은 혼돈의 시간을 보낸다. 어느 날 사라진 하비어. 그를 찾아 나선 밀라. 밀라는 넘어져 머리를 다치고 병원으로 옮겨지게 되고, 제왕절개로 아이를 무사히 낳게 되지만, 정작 밀라 본인은 의식 없이 병실에 누워있는다. 이때 그녀를 찾아온 하비어는 절규한다.

1943년 늦가을, 깊은 산 속에 레지스탕스 소대원들이 질병, 배고픔과 싸우며 나치 대원들을 사살하고 동조자들을 납치해 처형하는 임무를 위해 숨어있다. 한편 독일군과 조국의 변절자들을 가차 없이 잔인하게 처치하기로 유명한 오터 상병은 나치의 끄나풀이자 어릴 적 학교 동창인 콘돌레비치를 납치해 죽이라는 명령을 받는다. 그는 콘돌레비치를 레지스탕스 은신처로 끌고 오지만 부대원 전체가 목이 잘려 처참히 학살당한 모습을 발견한다. 분노에 찬 오터는 비극의 진실을 파헤치고 배신자의 정체를 찾아내 피의 복수를 하기로 결심한다. 하지만 냉혈한 살인마인 오터도 자비심과 동정심을 지닌 인간임이 드러나고 영웅의 모습으로 변모한다. 나치의 대대적인 수색대가 점점 포위망을 좁혀오는 가운데 복수를 끝내고 홀로 남은 오터는 독일군의 총성과 고함 소리가 들려오지만 도망치지 않고 마지막 임무를 수행한다.

뮬라는 시골에서 가족과 함께 살고 있다. 딸의 첫 성체 성사를 앞두고, 아이의 생물학적 엄마 카야가 이들을 찾아온다. 카야는 아이를 낳고 6년 동안 홀연히 자취를 감춘 뮬라의 여동생이다. 가족들은 화해를 원하지만, 카야가 딸을 데려가기 위해 왔다고 믿는 뮬라는 불안하다. 한편, 카야가 온 뒤 일련의 초자연적 현상이 일어나자 마을 사람들은 심경에 변화가 생긴다. 공포감을 느낀 뮬라는 동생이 사라지기를 바라지만, 카야는 다른 이유가 있어서 마을에 온 듯하다.

죽음을 앞둔 환자들을 돌보는 호스피스 간호사, 데이비드. 그는 누구보다 자신의 환자들에게 헌신하며, 다른 간호사들과 달리 환자들의 삶에 아주 깊숙이 개입한다. 자신이 맡은 환자에 따라 아픈 아내를 잃은 남편이었다가, 죽은 형을 그리워하는 건축가가 되기도 하는 그는 정작 본인의 삶에는 관심을 두지 않는다. 그런 데이비드의 태도가 과하다고 생각한 환자의 가족들은 우연한 사건으로 인한 오해로 그를 환자 학대로 고소하고, 결국 그는 직장을 잃게 된다. 이후 그를 믿는 지인의 소개로 다시 간호 일을 이어나가는 데이비드. 하지만 새로운 환자는 그의 과거를 캐내려 하고, 심지어 과거를 이용해 그가 감당하기 힘든 요구를 하기 시작하는데……
