무대 연출가 조 기디언(Joe Gideon : 로이 샤이더 분)은 과로와 흡연, 습관성 음주로 몸을 혹사하여 특별히 조제된 약을 먹지 않으면 안될 정도. 그런 대로 그는 새롭게 작품을 구상, 댄서들을 선발하여 자신의 기념비적인 무대를 마련코자 하는 한편, 영화를 만들어 편집 작업에 몰두하느라 쓰러질 지경에 이른다. 모든 일이 한창 고비에 이를 즈음 그는 주위의 완강한 권유로 병원에 입원한다. 심장병이란 진단에 따라 수술을 받으면서도 그는 중단된 무대 작업과 영영화를 완성하려는 집념뿐이다. 조가 환각 속의 자신과 자문자답하는 도중 그가 겪어온 인행, 구상하고 있는 작품의 편린들이 현란하게 영상위로 펼쳐진다. 한편 제작자 측은 그의 입원이 장기화 됨에 따라 흥행에서 오게될 손익을 계산해 본다. 만약 조가 죽어 쇼가 진행되지 못하면 보상금 50만달러가 고스라니 그들 손에 떨어진다는 결론이 나오자, 공연 추진을 보류한다. 이러한 사실을 알게된 조는 충격을 받고 병세가 급격히 악화되는데

무명 여배우 출신으로 돈 많은 남자를 낚으며 사는 어머니와 그런 어머니에게 걸려 애정 없는 결혼생활을 하는 의붓아버지를 둔 미니. 그런 미니에게 무엇이든 ‘새로운 경험(첫경험)’이 주는 흥분은 삶의 목표이기도 하다. 그러한 독특한 경험을 찾던 미니는 우선 에스코트 서비스 업체의 콜걸로 일하게 된다. 우연히 의붓아버지 마틴과 마주쳤을 때, 호기심이 동한 미니는 정체를 숨기고 마틴와 관계를 갖는다. 이를 계기로 둘은 은밀한 연인 사이로 발전한다. 급기야 두 사람은 어머니를 정신병원에 보낼 계획을 세우고, 미니는 마틴의 동조 아래 어머니의 술에 약을 타면서 갖은 방법으로 어머니를 괴롭힌다. 결국 신경쇠약에 걸린 어머니가 수면제를 먹고 자살을 시도하자, 미니는 구조대를 부르지 않고 더 확실한 방법으로 어머니의 자살을 돕는다. 무사히 장례를 치른 두 사람은 휴양지에서 자유를 만끽한다. 하지만 이 사건을 담당한 가슨 형사는 뭔가 석연치 않음을 느끼고 집요하게 파고들기 시작한다. 가슨의 개입으로 두 사람 관계도 점점 위태로워진다. 점점 타살을 의심할 만한 정황이 포착되고, 마틴과 미니의 밀애 장면이 담긴 익명의 사진까지 배달된다. 사태가 심각해지자 마틴은 일을 제대로 하지 못하고 자신이 세운 사업체에서 쫓겨날 처지에 놓인다. 하지만 미니는 여유롭기만 하다. 이웃에 사는 TV 프로그램 PD의 추천으로 짝짓기 프로그램에 출연하여 바람을 피우고도 당당하다.

Albom doesn't feel worthy, especially since he is no longer a practicing Jew and, in fact, he has married a Christian (who apparently isn't active either). Nevertheless, Rabbi Lewis says he is the one to do the job, and over the next eight years, Albom makes several visits back home and even attends some Sabbath services, where the good rabbi is determined to continue working and inspiring his flock even as his health declines.
