먼 옛날, 중남미의 어느 나라에 쿠스코란 이름의 황제가 있었다. 세상을 쥐었다 놨다하는 권력을 가진 그는 뭐든 자기 기분대로 안되면 상대가 누구든 박살을 내버리는 괴팍한 황제다. 마을에 있는 언덕의 따뜻한 양지에 여름 별장을 짓고 싶은 쿠스코는 마을 대표이자 마음씨 착한 농부 파차를 소환한다. 한편 황제의 권력을 노리는 마법사 이즈마는 시종인 크롱크를 시켜서 황제를 독살시키려는 계획을 세운다. 파차가 황제를 만나고 돌아간 뒤, 크롱크는 쿠스코에게 독약을 먹인다. 그런데 아뿔사, 목숨이 끝장나야 되는 황제가 라마로 변한 게 아닌가! 당황한 이즈마는 크롱크에게 라마 황제를 끌고 나가서 죽이라고 명령한다. 그러나 천방지축 실수만 연발하는 크롱크는 자루에 넣은 라마 황제를 시장 바닥에서 잃어버리고 만다. 자신의 마을이 황제의 별장으로 변해버릴 것을 걱정하며 집으로 돌아온 파차는 마차에서 꿈틀거리며 살려 달라고 “말하는” 라마를 발견하곤 경악한다. 라마 황제를 확인 사살까지는 하지 못하고 돌아왔다는 크롱크의 설명를 듣고 이즈마는 화가 머리 끝까지 치민다. 자신이 왜 라마가 됐는지 모르는 쿠스코 황제, 어떤 수를 써서든 언덕 마을에 별장을 짓지 못하도록 막고 싶은 파차, 살려 뒀다간 어떤 화가 닥칠지 모른다는 두려움 때문에 다급해진 이즈마, 자신이 선과 악의 어느 쪽에 속하는 지 도무지 갈피를 못 잡는 크롱크... 이들 네 사람 아니, 세 인간과 한 마리 동물 사이에 목숨과 명예를 건, 쫓고 쫓기는 추격전이 시작되는데...! 과연 라마가 된 황제는 다시 인간 황제가 될 수 있을 것인지...

고고학자인 사이몬(Cecil/Simon: 하비 코먼 분)은 아들 폴(Paul: 찰스 스트래톤 분)과 함께 페루의 마치피추에 갔다가 그곳 동굴에서 한 신기한 생물을 발견한다. 그것이 외계인이라고 믿은 사이몬은 그 생물을 집으로 데려온다. 사이몬은 아들 폴과 그의 애인 신디(Cindy: 나딘 반 더 벨드 분)에게 그 생물을 맡겨놓고 고고학 권위자인 크라우더 박사(Doctor Crowder: 폴 바텔 분)를 만나러 캘리포니아 대학으로 간다. 폴과 신디는 그 생물에게 악다귀라는 별명과 함께 아놀드라는 이름을 지어준다. 한데 둘이 잠깐 한 눈을 파는 사이에 욕심많은 사이몬의 쌍동이 동생 세실(Cecil/Simon: 하비 코먼 분)이 양아들 듀드(Dude: 존 스테포드 분)와 함께 나타나 아놀드를 납치해 간다. 세실은 듀드에게 아놀드를 잘 감시하라고 이르고 외출하는데, 그 사이 듀드와 아놀드 사이에선 싸움이 벌어진다. 화가 난 듀드는 칼로 아놀드의 몸을 동강내 버린다. 그러자 아놀드는 네 마리로 분열해 듀드를 죽여버린다. 한편 아놀드가 없어진 것을 안 폴과 신디는 세실의 집앞에서 악다귀들을 만난다. 악다귀들은 이들에게 총질을 하고는 듀드의 차를 타고 달아나버린다. 폴과 신디가 이들을 추격하는 사이 집에 돌아온 세실도 아놀드가 듀드를 죽이고 사라진걸 알고 뒤를 쫓는다. 경찰관인 빅에드(Big Ed: 하디 롤스 분)와 에디(Eddie: 찰리 필립스 분) 부자가 이에 가세한다. 악다기들은 차를 타고 가며 못된 장난을 다 저지르다가 결국은 세실이 새로 개장한 골프장에 침입한다.

3억5천만년 전 사라진 인간과 물고기 사이의 기묘한 생명체가 아마존에 살고 있다는 이야기. 고생물학자 칼 마이어는 아마존에 발굴작업을 하다가 데븐기 지층에서 인간과 유사한 양서류의 화석 일부를 발견한다. 그것을 잘라 연구소로 가져온 그는 남은 화석을 파내기 위해 연구소장인 마크 윌리엄즈, 어류학자인 데이빗 리드, 리드의 약혼녀인 케이 로렌스를 끌고 다시 아마존으로 돌아온다. 그런데 남겨놓은 원주민 조수 둘이 정체불명의 괴물에 의해 살해당한다. 그 괴물은 바로 데븐기부터 지금까지 진화하지 않고 살아남았던 아가미 인간이었고, 아가미 인간은 자기 영역에 들어온 침입자인 탐사대원들을 하나씩 살해하지만 하얀 수영복을 입은 케이 로렌스에 대해서만은 뭔가 다른 생각을 가지고 있는 듯 하다.케이는 결국 아가미 인간에게 납치 당하고 남은 사람들은 케이를 구출하려 나서는데...
