1980년대 중반 동독에서는 9만명이 넘는 비밀경찰(슈타지)과 약 17만명의 정보원이 활동했다. 만인에 대한 만인의 밀고로 유지되는 세계에서는 더 끈덕지게 의심하는 자가 유능한 멤버다. 주인공 게르트 비즐러(울리히 뮈헤)는 탁월한 감시 및 심문 실력과 정치적 신념으로 무장한 비밀경찰. 비즐러는 동독 최고의 극작가 드라이만과 그의 애인이자 인기 여배우 크리스타를 감시하는 중대 임무를 맡는다. 그러나 시간이 지날수록 드라이만을 체포할 만한 단서는 찾을 수 없다. 비즐러는 오히려 드라이만과 크리스타의 삶으로 인해 감동받고 사랑을 느끼며 이전의 삶과는 달리 인간적인 모습으로 변화하기 시작하는데...

플로리다 걸프 해안의 작은 마을에 사는 핀 벨은 누나와 가난하게 살지만 화가의 꿈을 키워나간다. 어느 날 그는 탈옥한 죄수 루스티그를 우연히 만나 그의 발목에 찬 족쇄를 풀어주면서, 그의 단순하고 평화로운 생활이 깨어짐을 느낀다. 러스티그는 곧 잡히고 만다. 인근에서 가장 부자로 소문나 있는 노라 딘스무어 여사로부터 갑작스런 초대를 받게 된 핀은 그녀의 은둔자적인 비밀스런 삶을 두려워하면서도 그녀의 조카인 에스텔라에 대한 막연한 동경과 사랑으로 매일 그녀를 찾는다. 에스텔라는 그런 핀에게 상류사회 특유의 냉정함과 오만함으로 일관하지만 핀이 그녀를 그린 그림에 깊은 인상을 받는다. 에스텔라를 사랑한다면 그의 마음만 아플거라는 노라의 충고에도, 어느 새 커버린 그들은 서로에 대한 호감을 억누를 수 없다. 노라의 말대로 에스텔라는 홀연히 파리로 떠나버리고 절망에 빠져 헤매던 핀은 그림그리기를 포기한 채 나날을 보낸다. 갑작스런 익명의 후원자 덕분에 뉴욕에 보내진 그는 화가로서의 꿈을 이루며 뉴욕 미술계의 유망주로 떠오른다. 부와 지위, 명성을 한꺼번에 얻게 된 핀은 에스텔라와의 갑작스런 재회에 행복해 하지만 그녀는 다른 남자의 청혼을 받아들였다는 한마디 말로 그에게 또한번 깊은 상처를 남긴다. 괴로워하는 핀 앞에 갑자기 나타난 루스티그는 상황을 더욱 복잡하게 만들며 그가 누리는 위대한 유산의 의미를 깨우쳐 주는데...

라주 히라니로 불리는 감독은 전형적인 발리우드 상업영화가 지배하는 인도 박스오피스에서 비평가와 대중으로부터 존경과 인정을 받는 몇 안 되는 소중한 존재다. "산주"는 인도 영화계의 화려한 스타배우에서 테러리스트로 몰락하며 영화보다 더 영화적인 삶을 살아온 배우 산자이 더트의 실제 인생을 담은 일종의 전기영화. 감독이면서 두려운 존재였던 아버지의 영향으로 연기를 시작하고, 스타의 반열에 올랐지만 마약과 화려한 여성편력으로 발리우드의 소문난 악동으로 살던 산자이가 1992년 뭄바이테러사건에 연루된 혐의로 실형을 선고 받아 수감되었던 시절을 보여준다. 대중의 호불호가 갈리는 인물을 다룬 전기영화가 피해갈 수 없는 숙명처럼, 개봉 당시 영화에 대한 호평과 함께 산자이 더트를 미화했다는 비판과 더불어 다양한 논쟁들을 촉발시키며 화제를 모으기도 했다. 올해 부산국제영화제 부산 클래식에서 상영되는 히라니 감독의 데뷔작 "문나 형님, 의대에 가다"의 주연 배우가 "산주"의 실제 주인공인 산자이 더트였다는 점이 관객들에겐 흥미로운 연결고리가 될 것이다. This documentary recounts the life and work of one of most famous, and yet reviled, German film directors in history, Leni Riefenstahl. The film recounts the rise of her career from a dancer, to a movie actor to the most important film director in Nazi Germany who directed such famous propaganda films as Triumph of the Will and Olympiad.
