화는 공부를 원하는 어머니의 뜻에 따라 일본으로 유학 오지만 학업에 정진하지 못하고 일본에서 취직해 생활한다. 일본에는 홍콩에서 사귄 친구 명과 장직이 있는데, 명은 출세의 야심을 품고 일본 야쿠자 보스의 여동생과 결혼한다. 장직은 명과는 달리 건실한 청년으로 실종된 여자친구를 찾기 위해 일본으로 건너왔다. 그러나 화는 장직과 함께 명의 아내가 경영하는 술집에 놀러갔다가 그곳에서 만난 철란을 좋아하게 되나 그녀는 야쿠자의 일원인 천야의 애인이다. 천야는 조직의 보스 서천 밑에서 자란 천애고아로 그는 자신을 키워준 서천을 위해 적대 조직의 두목을 살해하고 해외로 도망간다. 몇년 후 천야는 서천의 도움을 기대하고 일본으로 돌아오지만 서천은 적의 조지과 결탁해 천야를 죽이려 하고, 결국 천야는 이전의 살인증거물을 철란에게 주고 서천일당에게 죽음을 당한다. 철란은 천야의 유언을 지키기 위해 화에게 도움을 청하고 화는 단신으로 적지에 뛰어든다.

Andy Lau stars as a hotshot reporter who contracts a terminal disease. His days numbered, he decides to spend his remaining time chasing a big story. He journeys to Singapore, and tracks down a rogue trader (Kenny Bee), who brought down a large international bank with his illicit activities. Since he has nothing to lose, the reporter volunteers to become the trader's hostage, and uses their journey to find insight into his captor's offbeat criminal methods. But in learning the trader's story, he begins to learn something about the value of his own life, too.

The Suzie in the title refers to The World Of Suzy Wong, a great novel by British author Richard Mason which was made into a terrible Hollywood movie in 1960. Like Suzy, Shu Mei goes to work in a bar in Wanchai around the late 1950s, where sailors and foreign money are plentiful. But there isn't much similarity beyond this.
