엘르 마리아는 순록을 키우며 살아가는 스칸디나비아 렙랜드의 원주민 사미 족의 소녀. 1930년대의 인종주의와 인종생체학에 의해 박해받던 엘르는 새로운 삶을 꿈꾸며 도시로 탈출한다. 이제 그녀는 가족과 자신의 정체성을 다 버린 채 새로운 사람이 되어야 한다.
