오클라호마의 작은 마을 출신인 클라우드(존 새비지)는 입영을 며칠 앞두고 뉴욕으로 여행을 떠난다. 그는 그곳에서 징병을 기피한 채 떠도는 몇 명의 히피들을 만나는데, 그들의 리더인 버거(트리트 윌리엄스)는 클라우드에게 사흘 동안 자신들과 함께 지내자고 제안한다. 망설이던 클라우드는 어느 사이엔가 그들과 우정을 쌓으면서 새로운 세상에 눈을 뜨고 우연히 만난 부유한 집안 출신의 실러(비벌리 단젤로)와 사랑에 빠진다. 그러나 곧 클라우드는 신병훈련소로 떠나고 모두와 아쉬운 작별을 한다. 실러에게 보낸 편지를 통해 클라우드가 있는 곳을 알게 된 버거는 그를 만나기 위하여 자신의 긴 머리를 자른다. 군인으로 변장하고 군대에 들어간 버거는 클라우드를 잠시 부대 밖으로 내보내고 자기가 대신 졸병 노릇을 한다. 클라우드가 실러를 만나 사랑을 나누고 있는 사이 갑자기 베트남으로 전출 명령이 떨어지자, 버거는 친구 대신 헬리콥터를 타고 전쟁터로 떠난다.

After getting kicked out of college, Arlo decides to visit his friend Alice for Thanksgiving dinner. After dinner is over, Arlo volunteers to take the trash to the dump, but finds it closed for the holiday, so he just dumps the trash in the bottom of a ravine. This act of littering gets him arrested, and sends him on a bizarre journey that ends with him in front of the draft board.

It adroitly tells the story of a "counter culture" young man who when his grandfather dies, packs the body in dry ice, and stores him in a Tuff Shed, waiting for the time when advances in modern medicine can bring him back to life. I am not making this up. Then our young men gets deported back to Norway on unrelated charges. Then, quite a while later, people look up and take notice ... "Hey ... there appears to be a frozen dead guy in that shed over there."
