영국 런던의 브리티쉬 뱅크에 다니고 있는 조지 뱅크스, 여성 참정권을 주장하고 다니는 그의 아내 위니프레드 뱅크스, 그리고 매번 유모들을 쫓아내다시피 하는 말썽꾸러기 아이들 제인과 마이클. 그 날도 아이들은 유모 몰래 사라져 버리고 유모는 더 이상 못 참겠다며 가방을 싸들고 집을 나선다. 집으로 돌아오던 뱅크스 부인은 유모를 말려보지만 소용이 없다. 결국 유모는 뱅크스댁을 떠나게 되고, 그제서야 아이들이 돌아온다. 뱅크스씨는 신문에 유모를 구한다는 기사를 내려하고, 아이들은 자신들이 원하는 유모의 조건을 적어가지고 온다. 붉은 뺨을 하고 있어야 하고, 재미있는 놀이를 많이 알고 있는 유모를 원한다는 것이다. 그러나 뱅크스씨는 이 종이를 찢어버린다. 다음날, 면접을 보러 많은 사람들이 몰려오지만, 우산을 타고 내려온 메리 포핀스의 바람에 모두들 날아가 버린다. 어떨결에 메리 포핀스를 유모로 정하게 된 뱅크스씨. 아이들은 가방에서 옷걸이며, 화분이며 이것 저것을 꺼내는 메리 포핀스를 보며 신기해 한다. 메리 포핀스와 노래를 부르며 방을 치우고 굴뚝 청소부 버트와 함께 그림속 축제가 열리는 마을로 여행도 가고, 웃으면 붕 뜨는 알버트를 만나 함께 웃으며 즐거운 시간을 보낸다. 어느날 아이들은 아버지를 따라 브리티쉬 은행에 가게 되는데, 그곳에서 마이클이 가진 2펜스 때문에 소동이 벌어지는데...

크래커에 치즈를 얹어 먹는 것을 가장 좋아하는 월레스는 어느날 벽장에 치즈가 떨어진 것을 발견한다. 휴가철이 되자 월레스와 그로밋은 휴가지를 고르다 치즈가 가득한 달로 목적지를 정한다. 지하실에서 만든 로켓을 타고 달에 도착한 둘은 피크닉을 하며 여기저기 산책을 하다 우연히 홀로 남겨진 이상한 기계를 발견한다. 호기심에 동전을 넣어보지만 작동을 하지 않자 투덜거리며 기계 곁을 떠난다. 몇 초 후 동전을 넣은 탓인지 갑자기 움직이기 시작한 기계는 달 여기저기를 돌아다니며 치즈를 먹는 월레스를 보고 달을 망치는 중이라고 생각하는데...

런던 근교. 엉성한 발명품만 만들어내는 발명가 월레스는 생활비를 충당하기 위해 창문닦이 서비스를 하고 있다. 월레스의 영리하고 충직한 애견 그로밋은 전자공학에서 도스토예프스키까지 읽는 식견 높은 개다. 그로밋의 생일을 맞자 월레스는 전자바지를 선물한다. 첨단 공법으로 만든 전자바지는 그로밋의 산책은 물론 무슨 일이든 척척 해내는 만능바지. 그러나 이 선물 제작에 많은 돈을 쓴 나머지 생활비가 부족하자 하숙을 놓게 된다. 광고를 보고 세를 든 동거인은 야비한 성격의 수배범 펭귄 맥그로우. 자신의 위치를 빼앗긴 그로밋은 가출을 하기에 이르는데...

신문을 읽고 있던 그로밋은 월레스에게 신문을 보여주면서 걱정한다. 신문마다 양털이 부족한 사태로 떠들썩하고, 한편으론 양들이 계속 어디론가 실종되는 사건이 벌어지고 있는 것. 한편 그 즈음 부업으로 창문닦이 서비스를 하고 있던 월레스와 그로밋은 털실가게를 운영하는 웬돌린이라는 여인으로부터 가게의 쇼윈도우를 닦아달라는 요청을 받게 되고, 월레스는 웬돌린에게 한눈에 반해 버린다. 그리고 그녀의 반려견 프레스톤은 꺼림칙하게 둘을 바라본다. 그러던 어느 날 이상한 양 한 마리가 집에 찾아오는데...

For Kaleidoscope, which was sponsored by Churchman Cigarettes, Lye animated stenciled cigarette shapes and is said to have experimented by cutting out some of the shapes so that the light of the projector hit the screen directly. This experiment was a “prestige advertisement” for Shell Motor Oil. As conventional animation became dominated by Walt Disney, many European filmmakers turned to puppets as an alternative, and Lye enlisted the help of avant-garde friends such as Humphrey Jennings and John Banting to make the amusing puppets. Exploring the still-complex color process, which involved the combination of three separate images, Lye creates such a vivid storm scene that reviewers hailed it as “proof that the color film has entered a new stage.” The music is Holst’s The Planets. - Harvard Film Archive

Lye edited together “swing” versions of the popular Lambeth Walk (including Django Reinhardt on guitar and Stephane Grapelli on violin), combining them with a particularly diverse range of direct film images, scratched as well as painted. He was particularly pleased with a final guitar solo (with a vibrating horizontal line) and double bass solo (with a stomping vertical line). For this film Lye did not have to include any advertising slogans; friends at the Tourist and Industrial Development Association, shocked to learn that Lye and his family had become destitute, arranged for TIDA to sponsor the film – to the horror of government bureaucrats who could not understand why a popular dance was being treated as a tourist attraction. - Harvard Film Archive

Lye completed his last great film a few months before his death at the age of 78. The film returned to the black-and-white techniques of Free Radicals. Lye created what he called “vibrant little images” or “zig-zags” with a sense of “zizz”. The clusters of small scratches gave the film a unique texture – the images looked rough but were in fact extremely subtle. The title Particles in Space referred to flashes of energy of the kind sometimes seen by astronauts in space. The soundtrack combined “Jumping Dance Drums” from the Bahamas with drum music by the Yoruba of Nigeria and the sounds of Lye’s metal kinetic sculptures. The opening titles demonstrated Lye’s mastery of the scratching of letters and words on film, a method imitated by other film-makers such as Stan Brakhage.

Lye created a series of scratched images in the 1950s – more regular or geometric than his usual style – to accompany Rock ‘n’ Rye, a track by jazz guitarist Tal Farlow, but he did not get far with the editing. He returned to the material in 1980 but died before it was completed. His assistant Steven Jones finished the film under the supervision of Lye’s widow Ann, who had been closely involved with all of Lye’s American films. - Harvard Film Archive
