펠리아스는 아리스토왕을 죽이고 테살리아를 정복하겠지만 아리 스토왕의 자식에 의해 왕관을 빼앗기게 될 것이라는 신탁을 듣게 된다. 이에 두려움 을 느낀 펠리아스는 테살리아를 공격해 아리스토왕의 자식을 남김없이 처치하려 하지 만 제이슨은 헤라 여신의 도움으로 가까스로 살아남게 된다. 한편 헤라는 펠리아스에게 한쪽 신발을 신은 청년에 의해 죽게 될 것이라는 예언을 남기고. 세월이 흘러 청년이 된 제이슨은 헤라의 술책으로 물에 빠져 죽음의 위기에 처 한 펠리아스를 구하게 된다. 그러나 제이슨은 물에 뛰어들 때 신발을 한짝 잃게 되고, 이것을 본 펠리아스는 그가 아리스토왕의 자식임을 눈치채고, 평화를 위해서는 황금양털 이 필요하다는 핑계로 제이슨을 콜키스로 떠나 보낸다. 제이슨은 그리스의 최고의 선원들과 함께 항해를 떠난다. 그 중에는 헤라클레스도 끼어 있었다. 제이슨 일행은 청동거인 타로스와 스케레톤의 군대 등과 맞서 싸우며 천신만고 끝에 콜키스에 도착하지만 펠리아스가 미리 숨겨놓은 그의 아들 아카스터스의 모략으로 함정에 빠지게 된다. 콜키스의 여성 사제인 메디아의 도움으로 함정에서 벗어난 제이슨은 머리가 여럿 달린 괴물 히드라와의 처절한 사투 끝에 마침내 황금 양털을 빼앗아 콜키스를 빠져나온다. 그러나 이 모든 것이 제우스와 헤라가 인간을 말 삼아 벌인 장기게임이었으니.

60년대에도 여전히 흑인들이 목화 농장에서 노예 취급을 받았던 미국 남부 스파르타에서 한 북부 사업가가 피살된다. 조사에 착수한 보안관이 흑인이라는 이유로 체포한 사람은 바로 가족들을 만나러 온 형사 버질 팁스(시드니 포이티어)다. 무능하고 한심한 수사를 보다 못해 직접 나선 팁스는 사사건건 시비를 거는 백인 보안관 길레스피(로드 스타이거)와 함께 수사를 진행한다. 길레스피와 버질은 함께 사건을 겪으며 서로를 알아가고 차츰 인간적으로 가까워진다.

애정없는 결혼 생활을 이어가던 까미유와 뽈 자벨은 사소한 말다툼 끝에 헤어지기로 결심한다. 뽈은 불화의 원인이 자신의 바람기에 대한 아내의 질투심 때문이라고 생각하지만, 사실은 까미유가 예술가로서의 남편에 대한 존경심을 상실한 데에 있었다. 까미유는 자신의 모든 삶을, 특히 결혼생활과 남편을 경멸한다고 토로한다. 한편 소설가인 뽈은 대중적인 기호에 맞는 시나리오를 써 줄 젊은 작가를 찾던 헐리우드의 제작자 제레미 프로코슈에 발탁되어 프리츠 랑 감독이 연출을 맡기로 한 호메로스의 고전 <오디세이>의 시나리오를 쓰기로 한다. <경멸>은 장뤽 고다르 감독의 초기 대표작 중의 하나로, 인간관계를 다룬 드라마이며, 독일 영화의 거장 프리츠 랑 감독이 실명으로 출연해 호메로스의 <오디세이>를 현대적인 감각으로 각색해 만드는 '영화 속의 영화'를 찍는 과정을 담고 있다. 나도 한 번 '유럽 예술 영화'를 제작해보겠다고 덤비는 거칠고 무식하고 야비한 헐리우드의 제작자 프로코슈와 '돈이냐 예술이냐' 사이에서 갈등하는 시나리오 작가 뽈 자벨이 덧붙여져, 영화를 둘러싸고 벌어지는 이들 사이의 복잡한 인간관계를 중심으로 이야기가 전개된다. 이 영화는 '영화 속의 영화'를 만드는 과정을 통해 헐리우드 제작자들의 황금만능주의와 어리석음, 탐욕에 대한 풍자를 담아내며, 영화의 상업성과 예술적 표현 사이의 갈등을 정면으로 다루고 있다. 고다르는 '영화란 무엇이며, 사람들은 왜 영화를 만드는가'에 대해 관객들이 생각해 보도록 하려는 것이 <경멸>의 연출의도라고 밝힌 적이 있다. 그러나 그의 대부분의 영화가 그렇듯 시원한 해답을 제시하고 있지는 않다. 해답을 찾아내는 것은 어디까지나 관객의 몫으로 남겨질 뿐이다.

She tries to forcibly remove his uniform so he will not get into trouble for impersonating an Army officer. Finally she realizes that Pete is not Slicker but merely his mirror image.

Policeman Edgar Kennedy is told by his chief he better stop a string of burglaries that have been happening on his watch or else he will get the sack. He persuades vagrants Stan and Ollie to rob the chief's house so he can regain his reputation by catching them. The policeman promises to later get the boys off. Things do not go as planned.
