하야카와 문고에서 발매되고 있는 우부카타 토우의 동명 SF 소설을 원작으로 하여 제작된 극장용 시리즈 애니메이션. 원래는제작사 GONZO의 창립 15주년 기념작으로 제작하여 2006년 말에 OVA로 발매될 예정이었으나, 2006년 12월에 제작 중지가 발표되었고 급기야 2009년에 GONZO가 도산해 버리고 말았다. 프로젝트는 그대로 사장되는 듯 했으나, 이후 GoHands에서 프로젝트를 이어받아 3편의 극장판 시리즈로 기획을 변경하여 제작에 착수하여 드디어 빛을 보게 되었다. 원작자인 우부카타 토우는 국내에서는 등의 애니메이션 작품에 원작, 시리즈 구성으로 참여하면서 이름이 알려졌지만, 스니커 대상(금상 수상)을 시작으로 일본 SF 대상, 서점 대상, 요시카와 에이지 문학상 등 다수의 문학상을 수상하였으며 143회 나오키상에서도 노미네이트된 바 있는 주목 받는 SF 작가이다. 독특한 세계관 설정 속에서 무게감 있게 펼쳐지는 그의 필력은 사이버펑크 장르를 택하고 있는 이 에서도 확인 가능하다. 제목의 '마르두크(마르둑)'은 고대 메소포타미아의 신으로, 혼돈으로부터 세계를 창조한 주신으로 숭배되었다. 작중의 무대인 마르두크 시는 혼돈 그 자체를 상징하고 있다고도 볼 수 있는데, 주인공인 룬을 비롯한 등장인물들이 저마다의 복잡한 사고와 연계를 풀어나가는 이 공간의 이름으로 더할 나위없이 적절하다. 원작 소설은 마르두크 스크램블, 마르두크 벨로시티, 마르두크 아노니마스(미발매)로 이어지는 총 3부작으로 이뤄져 있는데, 애니메이션으로는 일단 '압축(The First Compression)', '연소(2.The Second Combustion)', '배기(The Third Exhaust)'라는 부제를 달고 있는 세 권 분량의 마르두크 스크램블 부분만 옮겨질 예정이다.
