젊지만 보수적인 그렉 신부(Father Greg Pilkington: 라이너스 로체 분)는 리버풀 빈민가에 위치하고 있는 새로운 교구에 위임된다. 거기서 매튜 신부(Father Matthew Thomas: 톰 윌킨슨 분)와 함께 지내게 되는데, 매튜는 교단의 보수주의와 형식주의에 항거하며 적극적인 포교 활동을 벌이는 인물이다. 게다가 독신의 맹세를 어기고 가정부와 연인 관계를 맺고 있는 매튜 신부. 그렉은 이런 매튜를 보며 혼란스러워진다. 교회와 하느님의 가르침에 회의를 느끼게 되는 그렉은 신부복을 벗고 들른 술집에서 우연히 그레이엄(Graham: 로버트 칼라일 분)을 만나 하룻 밤 깊은 사랑을 나눈다. 다음 날 아이들을 상대로 고해성사를 받던 그렉 신부는 어린 소녀 리사(Lisa Unsworth: 크리스틴 트레마코 분)로부터 의붓 아버지에게 성폭행을 당하고 있다는 고해를 듣게된다. 고통받는 리사를 구해줘야 한다는 생각을 하지만 고해성사는 절대 공개돼서는 안된다는 규율을 어길 수 없어 그렉은 고뇌하기 시작한다. 그리고 이 사실을 눈치 챈 리사의 아버지(Mr. Unsworth: 로버트 푸그 분)는 간섭하지 말라며 그렉을 협박한다. 어느 날 리사의 어머니(Mrs. Unsworth: 레슬리 샤프 분)는 자신의 남편이 리사를 성폭행하는 장면을 목격하게 되고, 그렉을 찾아와 이 사실을 미리 알고 있었으면서 아무것도 하지 않은 그렉을 원망한다. 자신의 무기력함에 괴로워하던 그렉은 그레이엄을 찾아가나, 두 사람의 연애 장면이 경찰에 적발되어, 다음날 그렉 신부가 동성애자라는 기사가 신문에 크게 실린다. 결국 자살을 시도하는 그렉. 그러나 그것은 수포로 돌아가고 주교는 그렉에게 근신을 명한다.

폴과 코리는 결혼식을 끝내고 시내의 호텔에서 5일 내내 나오지도 않고 신혼을 보낸다. 결혼한지 6일이 되는 날, 변호사 폴은 회사로 출근을 하고 코리는 그들이 이제부터 살게 될 새 아파트로 향한다. 그들이 살게 될 집은 아파트의 맨 윗층. 전화선을 연결해주러 온 전화국의 남자, 결혼 선물을 배달해 주러 온 백화점 배달원, 그리고 새 신랑 폴까지 엘리베이터가 없는 이 건물의 맨 윗층까지 올라오느라 고생을 한다.새 아파트에서 신혼 6일째 밤을 보내는 코리와 폴. 그들은 고장난 히터 때문에 양말에 모자까지 쓰고 자야할 상황에 놓이게 된다. 그때 다락방에 살고 있는 빅터란 사람이 찾아와 문이 잠겼다며 코리네 방의 창을 통해 집에 들어간다. 코리는 새 이웃을 만난 걸 기뻐하며 그에게 자신의 어머니 에델을 소개시켜 주고자 한다. 며칠 후, 코리와 폴, 에델은 빅터의 저녁 식사에 초대되어 함께 시간을 보내는데...
