20세 안팎의 줄리아노는 친구 아스파뉴 피쇼타와 함께 굶주린 농민을 위해 양곡을 훔쳐 운반하던 중 경찰에게 들켜 배에 총상을 입는다. 두 사람은 공작 부인 카밀라의 말을 훔쳐 수도원으로 도망친다. 치료를 할 줄 아는 이발사의 응급처치로 목숨을 건진 줄리아노는 자신의 일생을 민중을 위해 헌신할 것을 다짐한다. 줄리아노는 토지를 갖지 못하고 공작이나 지주에게 착취당하며 사는 농민들에게 토지를 나누어 주겠다는 큰 이상을 갖고 있다. 줄리아노의 대부이자 문학 교수인 아도니스는 항상 이 무모한 젊은이를 아끼면서도 마음에 걸려 한다. 마피아의 대부 돈 마지노 크로체는 젊은 날 자신과 닮은 점이 많은 줄리아노에게 마음이 끌려 자신의 부하가 되기를 부탁하나 줄리아노는 이를 거절한다. 줄리아노는 아스파뉴와 교수의 안내로 수도원 숲속에서 오랫 만에 연인 조반나를 만난다. 그녀의 오빠 실비오 페라는 사회주의자이며 농민운동가의 리더이고 조반나도 함께 농민의 의식을 개혁하려 한다. 드디어 행동개시를 결신한 줄리아노는 우선 아스파뉴와 함께 포도주 배달을 가장하여 유치장을 습격, 테라노바, 파사템포를 선두로 하는 산적들을 해방시키고 친구가 될 것을 권유한다. 며칠 후 산에서 기다리는 줄리아노와 아스파뉴에게 테라노바와 파사템포가 많은 부하들을 거느리고 나타난다. 훔친 금을 3등분 하기로 합의, 이렇게 해서 줄리아노를 리더로 하는 의적단이 생겨난다. 줄리아노는 열차를 습격, 군대의 금을 뺏어 조반나에게 금을 건네주며 농민이 토지를 살 수 있는 자금으로 쓰도록 한다. 쥴리아노의 강탈은 계속되고 시실리의 많은 사람들의 추앙을 받게 된다. 쥴리아노의 결혼식날 어떤 밀고자에게 의해 경찰의 급습을 받지만 탈출에 성공, 1천만 리라의 상금이 걸린 현상범으로 경찰의 추격을 받게 된다. 하지만 믿었던 동지의 배신으로 거리 한가운데에서 돈 마지노 크로체가 보낸 자객에 의해 암살되고 만다.

베이비 돌이라는 별명으로 불리는 여주인공은 자신보다 나이가 훨씬 많은 대머리 아저씨인 아치와 18세에 결혼을 하게 된다. 스무살 때까지 함께 잠자리를 할 수 없다는 조건을 갖고 결혼한 두사람. 아치는 그녀가 스무살이 되기만을 기다리고 있다. 목화씨를 솜으로 만드는 사업을 하고 있는 아치의 마을에 같은 일을 하는 실바가 운영하는 큰 공장이 들어서게 되고, 앙심을 품은 아치는 실바의 공장에 불을 지른다. 아치를 의심하는 실바는 아치에게 일을 의뢰하겠다는 핑계로 아치의 집에 갔다가 베이비 돌을 보고 반하게 된다. 베이비 돌 또한 자신의 남편에 비할 수 없이 멋진 실바를 보고 반하게 되는데...
