긴장만 하면 잠들어 버리는 기면발작증에 걸린 마약중독자 마이크(리버 피닉스)는 고향 아이다호를 떠나 포클랜드의 사창가에서 남창으로 살아간다. 마이크의 유일한 친구인 포클랜드 시장의 아들 스코트(키아누 리브스)는 남부러울 것 없지만 아버지에 대한 반발심으로 방황한다. 그러던 어느날 마이크는 연어떼가 태어난 곳을 찾아 돌아오듯이 어머니와 고향 아이다호로 돌아가길 바라며 스코트와 어머니를 찾으러 아이다호로 떠난다. 하지만 어머니는 이미 아이다호를 떠난 상황이었었고 스코트는 카멜라(키아라 카셀리)와 사랑에 빠져 있었다. 어머니를 찾지도 못하고 스코트 마저 잃은 마이크는 절망에 빠진 채 포클랜드로 되돌아 오는데...
