욕심이라고는 없이 순진무구하게 살아가는 브래디 가족. 어느날 단란한 이 가족에게 생각지도 못한 위기가 닥친다. 재산세가 체납되어 2만 달러라는 거금을 주말까지 구하지 못하면 그들의 보금자리인 집이 공매 당할 처지에 놓인 것이다. 게다가 이웃집에 사는 부동산업자는 그 지역 주민들을 모두 이주시켜 그 곳에 쇼핑센터를 지으려고 한다. 브래드 가족의 아이들이 이 소식을 듣고 걱정하고 있을 무렵, 브래드는 다행히 회사에서 자신이 설계한 건축물이 팔리게 되었고 돈을 구할 수 있게 된다. 그러나 브래디 가족의 집이 공매당하길 바라던 이웃집 부동산업자가 이 소식을 듣고 브래디의 회사에 나쁜 소문을 퍼뜨려 브래디가 사장에게서 돈을 받을 수 없게 만드는데...
