허블 우주 망원경을 수리하기 위해 우주를 탐사하던 라이언 스톤 박사는 폭파된 인공위성의 잔해와 부딪히면서 우주 공간에 홀로 남겨진다. 탑승했던 왕복선은 파괴됐고 산소는 희박해져간다. 홀로 남겨졌다는 공포가 그녀를 휘감아 가던 순간, 그녀의 앞에 베테랑 동료 우주비행사인 매트 코왈스키가 구세주처럼 나타난다. 인공위성의 잔해가 지구를 한 바퀴 돌아 다시 덮쳐오기까지 걸리는 시간은 단 90분. 그 전에 그들은 우주 왕복선과 가까이 있는 ISS로 이동해서 소유즈를 활용해 지구로 귀환하기로 하는데...

만화책과 좀비영화를 좋아하는 9살 마일로는 사사건건 잔소리를 늘어놓는 엄마와 매일매일이 전쟁이다. 그러던 어느날 밤 화성인들에게 납치되는 엄마를 구하기 위해 달려가다 얼떨결에 우주선에 탑승해 화성으로 날아간다. 도착하자마자 화성의 감옥에 갇힌 마일로는 괴짜박사 그리블의 도움으로 풀려나고 엄마를 구하기 위해 화성인들과 일생일대의 전쟁을 시작한다.

모두가 갈망하는 공중도시와 그들을 위해 존재하는 고철도시로 나누어진 26세기. 고철 더미 속 모든 기억을 잃은 채 깨어난 알리타는 마음 따뜻한 의사 이도의 보살핌으로 새로운 삶을 시작한다. 이도는 사이보그인 알리타에게 특별한 과거의 비밀과 영혼이 존재한다는 사실을 깨닫고 미스터리한 과거로부터 그녀를 지키고자 한다. 한편 새로운 친구 휴고는 알리타가 위험한 고철도시를 헤쳐나갈 수 있는 방법과 함께 기억을 되찾도록 돕는다. 알리타가 자신의 과거에 다가갈수록 도시를 지배하는 악랄한 세력들이 그녀를 노리며 제거하려고 하는데...

런던의 지하철 확정 공사장에서 해골이 발견 되는 것으로 시작합니다. 고생물 학자인 매튜 로니 박사가 투입이 되고 발굴이 이루어지게 됩니다. 로니 박사 팀들은 추가로 유골들이 발견이 하고, 이 유골이 5백만년전의 "원인"이라는 것을 알아내게 됩니다. 그동안 발굴 된 그 원인들 보다 오래 된 것으로 밝혀지게 됩니다. 오스트랄로피테쿠스 보다 무려 1백만년이 앞선 원인을 발견 하게 된 것입니다. 발굴은 여기서 그치지 않고 미지의 금속 물체가 땅 속에 묻혀 있다는 것을 발견 하게 됩니다. 발굴 팀은 이 물체가 2차 대전 당시 공습되어 터지지 않고 묻혀 있던 폭탄으로 의심으로 하고, 군에 폭탄 해체 팀을 요청 하게 됩니다. 이 시각 자신의 달 식민지화 계획을 군에 뻬앗긴 버나드 쿼터매스 박사는 크게 실망 하게 있는 데요. 전작들을 보신 분들이 쿼터매스 박사가 영국의 우주 계획 리더였다는 것을 기억 하시리라 봅니다. 쿼터매스 박사의 로켓 계획을 이어 받은 브린 대령은 쿼터매스 박사를 방문 하고 그때 부관으로 부터 폭탄 해체반으로 부터 와달라는 연락을 받게 됩니다. 브린 대령은 쿼터매스 박사를 대동하고 이 물체가 발견 된 장소로 향하게 됩니다.

After embarking through a golden igneous cavern, braving a storm and finding an unmanned Earth vessel, they discover a golden road which leads them to the unchanging ruins of what was once a beautiful Martian city. The Martians are modeled on the Flatheads of Oz, and their collective consciousness, the "Wizard," forbids them to leave until they perform a very small task...

Film opens on December 18, 1999, just a few days before the dawn of the new century. A local reporter, Iron Idem, announces that the Martians have landed. Shortly after that his program loses its independence: he is given the script telling the crowds how to welcome the invaders.

The film tells the story of the experiences of Major Syrtis during the first Christmas on a newly-colonized Mars. Coyne has described the film as "Maybe Eraserhead or Dead Man crossed with some kind of fantasy and space aspects, like The Wizard of Oz and maybe A Space Odyssey, and set at Christmas-time. The story that unfolds is intended to hint at childlike magic within a tragic and realistic situation."
