유사 비트 세대 작가인 찰스 부코프스키의 두 번째 소설을 원작으로 한 작품. 는 여러 직업을 전전하며 아무 여자와 의미 없는 관계를 갖는, 밑바닥 생활을 하지만 작가의 꿈을 품고 사는 남자 헨리에 관한 이야기다. 헨리는 출판사의 계속되는 거절로 좌절하지만 자신의 예술관을 버리지 않는다. 아키 카우리스마키가 제작한 작품으로 헨리 역을 맡은 맷 딜런은 그의 연기 인생 중 가장 훌륭한 연기를 선보였다는 호평을 받았다.
