수년 전부터 자신들의 큰 기쁨이자 유일한 자랑거리인 8mm 영화 상영을 위해 막내 마샬(Marshall Stouffer: 조나단 테일러 토마스 분)을 의자에 묶어 폭죽과 함께 나무 위에서 수영장 안으로 떨어뜨리는 고난도 액션 영화를 만들던 마티(Marty Stouffer Jr.: 스콧 베어스토 분)와 마크(Mark Stouffer: 디본 사와 분)는 우여곡절 끝에 16mm 카메라를 구입하게 된다. 마샬을 놀리는 것 말고 다른 촬영거리를 구하기 위해 집 주위의 숲 속을 헤메던 중, 실수로 노루를 죽이게 된 마티는 이를 계기로 '멸종에 처한 동물들의 다큐멘터리'를 찍기 위한 여정을 계획하고 동생들과 함께 모험에 나서게 된다. 그 여름 삼형제는 놀랍고도 위험한 동물들과 기이한 사람들을 연속으로 만나게 되고 그들과의 대면에서 몇 차례 간신히 목숨을 건지는 위험에 부딪치지만 촬영은 한 순간도 멈추지 않는다. 뿔사슴에 얹혀서 강물에 빠져 폭포까지 떠내려간 마샬, 악어의 먹이 장면을 촬영하던 중 오히려 자신이 먹이가 될 뻔한 마크, 이 와중에도 끝까지 카메라를 부여잡고 있던 마티, 삼형제는 위험하지만 유쾌한 모험을 계속해 나간다. 이들은 가장 매력적인 동물들의 사라져가는 서식지를 찾던 중 우연히 '곰들이 집단으로 겨울 잠을 자는 동굴'을 발견하게 되고 사람들의 만류에도 불구하고 동굴 속으로 과감하게 들어간다. 곰들을 카메라에 담는 과정에서 몇 년간 형들에게 괴롭힘을 당하면서 길러진 마샬의 대담성이 뜻밖에 행운의 결과로 나타나고 오히려 형들보다 더 용감하게 위험을 극복해 나간다. 삼형제의 목숨을 건 촬영은 이전의 그 누구도 하지 못했던 생생한 장면들을 담아낼 수 있게 되는데.
