Hell's Island (1930)

조국과 명예를 위해 목숨을 걸고 전장터를 누볐던 네이든 알그렌 대위. 그러나 남북전쟁이 끝난 후, 세상은 변했다. 용기와 희생, 명예와 같은 군인의 덕목은 실용주의와 개인의 이익을 추구하는 시대 흐름에 밀려 설 자리를 잃게 되고, 그가 참여했던 전쟁의 명분조차 퇴색해버리자 알그렌은 허탈감에 빠진다. 그리고 지구 반대편에선 또 한명의 무사가 가치관의 혼란 속에 갈등을 겪고 있었다. 황제와 국가에 목숨 바쳐 충성해온 사무라이의 마지막 지도자 카츠모토가 바로 그. 미국이 신문명의 조류 속에서 변혁의 소용돌이에 휘말려있던 그 시기에, 일본의 전통 문화 역시 서양 문물의 도입으로 개혁의 홍역을 앓고 있었다. 새롭게 도입된 철도와 우편제도는 사무라이가 수세기 동안 목숨 걸고 지켜온 가치관을 뒤흔들어 놓고 있었던 것이다. 그러나, 카츠모토에게 전쟁 없는 삶은 곧 죽음이었다.

프랑스 외인 부대 병사인 리온(Lyon: 쟝-끌로드 반담)은 형이 중태에 빠져있다는 소식을 듣고 휴가를 신청하자 거절당하고 끝내는 탈영을 하게 된다. 외인 부대에서는 리온을 잡기 위해 추적자를 보내고, 리온은 뉴욕에 도착한 후 여비 마련을 위해 우연히 만난 죠슈아(Joshua: 해리슨 페이지 분)와 지하 주먹 싸움계에 뛰어든다. 혈전을 거듭하면서 돈을 마련한 리온은 죠슈아와 LA로 가지만 형도 이미 숨을 거두고 형수(Helene: 리사 펠리칸 분)는 리온을 오해해 그를 받아들이지 않는다. 그러나 리온은 신시아(Cynthia: 데보라 레나드 분)의 소개로 주먹싸움을 하며 번 돈을 계속 형수에게 익명으로 보낸다. 형수와의 관계를 오해한 신시아는 무적의 아시아 챔피언과의 싸움을 계략적으로 준비해 그를 함정에 빠뜨리려고 하나 리온은 그의 힘과 의지를 다해 시합에서 이긴다. 한편 그를 찾아온 추적자들은 형수와 조카딸을 위하는 리온을 풀어주고 화해를 한다.

고대 이집트의 파라오 중 가장 영화를 누렸던 세티 1세의 시대. 세티 1세의 정부인 앙크수나문과 세티 1세의 총애을 한몸에 받던 승정원 이모탭은 금지된 사랑에 빠진다. 그러나 그들의 운명적인 사랑은 얼마되지 않아 파라오에게 발각되고 이에 앙크수나문은 자결하게 된다. 이모텝은 흑마서의 주문으로 그녀를 부활시키려 하지만, 파라오의 근위대에 붙잡히게 되고, '홈다이'라는 형벌에 처해진다. 홈다이란 산 채로 석관에 갇혀 영원히 생시체가 되는 끔찍한 극형. 결국 금지된 사랑은 파라오의 저주로 비극적인 끝을 맺고 왕족들이 잠든 하무납트라는 죽음의 도시가 되어 역사 속에 묻힌다. 황금의 유물을 찾아 여러 탐험가들이 하무납트라를 찾아오지만 하나 같이 의문의 죽음을 당하고, 전투 중에 피신했던 외인부대 장교 오커넬만이 유일하게 살아남는다. 그 소식을 들은 이집트 박물관 사서 이비와 그녀의 오빠 조나단이 오커넬을 찾아오고 죽음의 도시 하무납트라에 관한 단서를 듣게 된다. 용기와 모험심으로 뭉친 세 사람은 의기 투합하여 하무납트라의 황금유물을 찾아 떠나기로 한다. 한편 파라오의 저주를 푸는 열쇠를 손에 넣은 조나단은 실수로 이모텝을 부활시키고, 마침내 3천년을 기다려온 엄청난 분노가 온 이집트를 뒤덮는데. 아무것도 모르는 세 사람은 죽음과 저주의 왕국 한 가운데에서 살아난 미이라와의 사투를 벌인다.

외인부대의 지휘관과 젊은 병사 사이에서 한 여인이 삼각관계의 갈등을 겪는 이야기.

낙오된 외인부대의 한 잊혀진 소대, 전쟁 게임을 하고 도로공사를 하는 유령부대의 잔존자들 사이에서 마르세이유의 준위였던 갈루는 회상에 잠긴다. 하지만 모든 것이 조화를 이루었던 행복했던 시절이 지나고 그가 결국 잃은 것은 지금의 젊은 부대원과는 결코 나눌 수 없는, 그의 지휘관에 관한 추억이다.

Ollie is in love with a woman. When he discovers that she is already married, he tries to kill himself. Of course, the suicide is avoided and the boys join the Foreign Legion to get away from their troubles. Finally, they are arrested for trying to desert the Legion and to escape the firing squad by stealing a plane.

Jonesy and Lou are in Algeria looking for a wrestler they are promoting. Sergeant Axmann tricks them into joining the Foreign Legion, after which they discover Axmann's collaboration with the nasty Sheik Hamud El Khalid. Bits include Lou's mirage sightings, one a New York newsboy ("they gave me a bad corner").

After his daughter died of cancer, former French foreign legionnaire "Straight Shooter" alias Volker Bretz threatens those who financed, built, favoured and now work the nuclear power plant Atar II to kill one of them each day until the plant is shut down. His former drill sergeant, Frank Hector, who now owns several night clubs and brothels, is the only one who might be able to stop the maniac killing specialist. And Fred Collins makes a poignant journey to the hotel where he'd honeymooned with his late wife. The film works best as a low-key comedy-drama; it is least successful when it ventures into O. Charles Jackson, an American sea-captain and singing soldier-of-fortune, is arrested by the French Foreign Legion for running guns to the rebel forces in Morocco fighting against the rule of the French in north Africa. He is saved by Lili La Fleur, a singer/dance in a Morocco café and, through her, eventually becomes a hero to the Foreign Legion.

Shiek Yousseff, poses as a friend of the French while secretly plotting to overthrow them. Apposing Yousseff are the Riffs, whose secret leader, The Red Shadow, is Paul Bonnard, a professor who is studying the desert, and whose attacks on the supply trains intended for Yousseff keep the Riff villages in food. Foreign Legion General Birabeau arrives to conduct an investigation, accompanied by his daughter, Margot. Birabeau hires Bonnard to tutor her, and she is attracted to a Legionaire captain, Claud Fontaine. While the general, Bonnard and Fontaine pay a visit to Yousseff, an American newspaper man, Benji Kidd, discovers a secret way in and out of Yousseff's palace, with the aid of Azuri, a dancing girl in love with Bonnard. The latter is forced to resume his role as the Riffs leader, and kidnap Margot until he can convince her of Yousseff's treachery. But Yousseff's men attack the Riff camp and take Margot prisoner.

Andre has known a lot of war, he comes to Los Angeles to change his life. Taking a job as a nightclub bouncer he learns, that for some men, change is impossible.
