사립탐정 필립 말로우는 퇴역장군 스턴우드 장군의 부름을 받고 그의 대저택을 방문한다. 병환 중에 있는 스턴우드 장군에게는 두 명의 아름다운 딸 비비안과 카르멘이 있었다. 큰 딸 비비안은 도박꾼에 알코올 중독자며 둘째 딸 카르멘은 마약중독자이다. 스턴우드 장군은 둘째 딸과 관련되어 협박하는 사람들에 대해 해결을 해줄 것과 다른 하나는 사라진 리건을 찾아달라고 말로우를 고용한다. 그러나 사건을 조사하던 필립은 협박자 가이거가 서점을 위장해 포르노잡지를 판매한다는 사실을 알아낸다. 가이거의 뒤를 ?던 필립은 우연히 가이거의 피살 현장을 목격하게 되고. 그 범인이 카르멘을 사랑하고 있던 스턴우드의 운전사 오웬 테일러라는 사실을 알게 된다.
