외진 곳 외딴 집에서 아파서 거의 침대에만 누워서 사는 앤디. 부모님을 잃고 외딴 곳, 할머니 할아버지의 시골집으로 오게 된 매리앤. 매리앤은 집 주변을 서성이다 앤디의 집을 발견하고 앤디와 친구가 되려 하지만 웬일인지 의사인 앤디의 엄마는 매리앤이 오는 걸 탐탁치 않아한다.

아내 애니(Annie: 엘리자베스 슈 분)와 조촐히 살아가는 매튜(Matthew: 카일 맥라클란 분)는 아이가 갑자기 고열증세를 보이자 병원에 연락하지만 통신이 두절된 상태이고 약을 사기 위해 약국으로 가지만 처방전이 없다고 거절당한다. 다급해진 매튜는 결국 약사 몰래 약을 훔쳐 달아난다. 한편 매튜는 자신의 집을 방문한 친구 조(Joe: 더못 멀로니 분)로부터 지난밤 무수한 총격전이 있었고, 많은 사람들이 희생되었으며, 시내의 많은 상점에서 약탈이 있었다는 소문을 듣게 된다. 시내로 나온 두 사람은 교통신호 체계가 마비된 도시가 자동차와 사람들이 엉켜서 극도의 혼란이 계속되고 있고, 많은 사람들이 도시를 떠나는 것을 목격한다. 그리고, 이들은 예상되는 위험에서 자신들을 지키기 위해, 총포상에 들러 샷건을 구입한다. 그날 밤, 매튜의 집에 도둑이 침입하고 먼저 인기척을 느낀 조와 매튜는 범인이 집 밖으로 나갈 때 그를 덮친다. 범인은 칼을 가지고는 있었지만, 그리 위협적이지 않아 두 사람은 그냥 쫓아내려고만 한다. 그런데 이 장면을 목격한 한 이웃이 저항하지 않는 범인에게 총을 쏘고 만다. 경찰에는 범인이 권총을 가지고 있었기 때문에 불가피했다고 말하지만 매튜는 심한 죄의식에 시달리게 된다. 일요일, 더 이상 살기 어렵다고 판단한 매튜는 이 도시를 떠나 자신의 부모에게 가기로 결심한다. 그런데 도로에서 차가 고장난 사람을 도우려던 중 오해가 생겨 우발적인 총격전 끝에 차를 빼앗기고 설상가상으로 조가 어깨에 총상까지 입는다. 진퇴양난의 상황에서 매튜는 애니와 아이, 그리고 조를 현장에 남겨두고, 한참을 헤맨 끝에 인가를 발견한다. 집주인에게 사정을 말하고 도움을 청하지만, 이미 불신이 깊어진 그는 매튜를 쉽게 도와주지 않으려 한다. 결국 몰래 그의 차를 훔쳐 나오던 매튜는 주인과 맞부딪혀, 서로 총을 겨누게 되는데.
