Against her better judgment, young American student, Emily, agrees to a weekend camping in the English countryside with her new boyfriend, Jay and his strange cousin, Julia. A simple walk in the woods becomes a lethal brush with nature when Emily discovers that her new friends aren't who they seem - and her life is in danger - Beneath the Trees.
2차 세계대전이 끝난 후, 랭카스터 메린 신부(스텔란 스카스가드)는 죄 없는 사람들이 죽음을 당한 끔찍한 기억에 사로잡혀 신앙심마저 잃게 되어 성직자로서의 삶을 포기한다. 아픈 기억을 잊기 위해 고향을 떠난 메린은 낯선 골동품 수집상으로부터 아프리카 케냐 투르카나 외곽 지역에서 진행되고 있는 발굴팀에 합류할 것을 제의 받는다. 이들이 발견한 것은 원형 상태 그대로 보존되어 있는 동로마 제국 시대의 교회. 골동품 수집가는 메린에게 교회 안에 숨겨져 있는 고대 유물을 찾아 가져올 것을 부탁하지만 그것은 단순한 고대 유물이 아니었다. 발굴팀을 돕던 원주민들이 갑작스럽게 광기에 휩싸이자, 영국은 군대를 파견해 발굴팀을 경호하게 된다. 무고한 원주민들의 피가 동아프리카의 평원을 물들이고 끔찍한 공포가 밀려오는 순간, 메린은 사탄이 태어난 바로 그곳에서 사탄과 대면하게 된다.
스스로를 목자라 칭하는 아이작은 가틀린이란 마을에서 아이들에게 그 마을의 모든 어른들을 죽이게끔 주문을 건다. 그러던 어느 날, 그 마을을 지나가던 젊은 연인이 이상한 사건을 맞게 되고 그 아이들에게 붙잡혀 갇히게 되는데...

열두 살 어린 소녀의 실종사건을 조사하기 위해서 어느 경찰관이 스코틀랜드의 한 섬으로 파견된다. 경찰관의 강렬한 기독교적 믿음은 이 섬 공동체 주민들의 오래된 종교적인 믿음, 문화와 정면으로 충돌하는데... 로빈 하디 감독의 (1973)은 호러영화 역사상 베스트 리스트에 절대 빠지지 않는 컬트영화다. 2006년에 리메이크된 닐 라뷰트 감독의 은 그해 골든 라즈베리 어워드의 작품상과 남우주연상 후보에 오른 영화다. 5년이나 국내에 지각 개봉하는 은 아마도 할리우드 사상 최악의 리메이크 사례 중 하나로 영원히 역사의 단두대에 올라야 할 작품이다. 은 오리지널 이야기의 뼈대를 거의 그대로 유지하면서 약간의 변화를 준다. 오리지널 은 한 영국 경사가 실종된 아이를 찾기 위해 이교도들이 사는 섬으로 들어가면서 시작되는 이야기였다. 새로운 은 캘리포니아 경찰관 에드워드(니콜라스 케이지)가 실종된 딸을 찾아달라는 약혼녀 윌로우(몰리 파커)의 편지를 받고 이교도의 섬으로 들어간 뒤, 실종된 아이가 자신의 딸임을 깨닫게 되면서 시작된다. 에드워드는 남자들을 노예로 부리는 여성 이교도들이 그 섬을지배하고 있다는 사실을 알게 된다. 비록 영화 역사상 최고의 반전(反轉)영화 중 하나로 손꼽히기는 하지만, 오리지널 은 이야기의 힘 덕분이 아니라 이교도들의 기이한 이미지와 뜬금없이 얽히는 장르의 결합이 주는 에너지 덕분에 컬트의 신전에 올랐다. 닐 라뷰트 감독은 거의 유아적인 솜씨로 오리지널의 이미지를 베끼면서 반전 스릴러로서의 기능에만 몰두한다. 이교도 수장을 연기하는 엘렌 버스틴 역시 오리지널의 수장이던 크리스토퍼 리의 기괴함을 좀처럼 따르지 못한다. 남자들을 씨받이 종으로 부리면서 여성만의 농경 유토피아를 건설하고 싶어하는 극단적 페미니스트라면 즐길 법도 하겠다.
고고학자 앤거스는 메리와 이브 자매의 집뜰에서 공룡과 비슷한 두개골을 발견하고 자기방에 안치한다. 그날 밤 파티에 갔다온 앤거스와 매리는 어니로부터 동굴에서 발견했다는 아버지의 시계를 받는다. 메리는 홀연히 자취를 감춘 부모가 살아 있다고 믿었으므로 내일 동굴 수색에 나서기로 한다. 다음날 파티에서 밤을 샌 이브가 제임스와 함께 온다. 그녀는 무서운 환상을 보고 제임스는 불길한 예감에 두개골을 찾지만 어디론가 사라지고 없다. 제임스는 봄이면 신전의 저택에 오는 실비아가 뱀의 화신이라고 확신하고 메리, 앤거스와 함께 동굴을 탐사한다. 그리고 혼자 집에 오던 이브는 실비아의 마법으로 저택에간다. 앤거스가 발견한 두개골과 인신공양할 처녀가 있으면 어둠의 왕 다이오니온을 부활시킬 수 있는 것이다. 앤거스는 이브를 구하기 위해 혈청주사를 맞고 신전의 저택으로 간다. 사녀로 변한 실비아에게 물리면서도 간신히 이브를 구출하고, 실비아와 되살아나려던 흰구렁이를 수류탄으로 박살낸다.
