녹슨 철의 일그러진 표면과 쇠가 부딪치고, 깎이고, 제련되는 소름 끼치는 소리, 그리고 쇠와 쇠 사이에 흘러 내리는 물과 기름은 감독의 불안감을 상징하는 이미지로 어릴 때부터 꿈에 등장한다. 감독은 악몽의 원인을 찾아 여기저기 쇠를 깎고 있는 서울에 영세한 공장이 밀집해 있는 청계천 뒷골목을 헤맨다. 그 과정에서 감독은 일제 강점기에 일본에서 고물상을 운영하던 할아버지의 경험이 감독의 아버지와 자신에게 대를 이어 내려오는 하나의 집단 무의식으로 감지하면서 돌아가신 할아버지께 편지를 쓰는 형식으로 융(Jung)적인 집단 무의식을 자기가 참여하고 관찰한 청계천의 다양한 철공소, 주물 공장, 금형 공장 등을 통해 영상 이미지로 재구성 하기 시작한다. 자신의 악몽이 급변의 시기를 겪은 지난 세대의 충격적 경험으로서 대대로 꿈이라는 무의식을 통해 전승되는 것이 아닐까라는 질문을 할아버지에게 던지며 불안전한 톤의 내레이션이 펼쳐지는 매우 “주관적”인 다큐멘터리가 시작된다.
