매튜 폰스렛은 데이트 중이던 연인을 강간하고 잔혹하게 살해한 혐의로 사형선고를 받은 사형수이다. 그는 감옥생활의 고통을 같이 나눠줄 사람이 필요하다는 내용의 편지를 한통 보낸다. 이 편지는 루이지애나의 흑인 빈민가에 있는 헬렌 수녀에게 도착한다. 그녀는 그를 만나기로 하고 교도소로 간다. 그러나 헬렌은 자신이 무죄라고 주장하며 돈이 없어 변호를 받지 못한다는 매튜의 말을 듣고 그가 사형만은 면할 수 있도록 도와주기 위해 무보수로 봉사하는 힐튼 바버 변호사와 함께 노력한다. 그러나 매튜의 잔혹함을 알고 그 일에서 손을 뗀다. 사형 집행일 6일전 매튜는 헬렌수녀를 찾아 그녀가 자신과 사형장까지 함께 하는 영적 안내자가 되어 달라는 부탁을 한다. 주위의 힐난과 걱정을 뒤로한채 헬렌 수녀는 매튜의 사형 집행일까지 6일 동안을 그와 함께 하기로 결정하는데...
