작은 도시의 극장에서 뮤지컬을 공연하는 개구리 커밋과 그의 친구들은 더 큰 무대, 브로드 웨이로 진출한다. '맨하탄 멜로디'라는 뉴욕에 와서 결혼하는 커플 얘기를 다룬 대본을 들고 많은 제작사들을 찾아다니지만 문전박대를 당하기 일쑤다. 가지고 있던 돈도 바닥이 나고, 커밋에게 너무 의존한다고 생각한 친구들은 헤어져 각자의 길을 찾기로 한다. 커밋은 식당에서 일하면서 틈틈히 제작사를 찾아다닌다. 의상을 전공하는 식당주인의 딸 제니의 도움을 받아 3단계 작전을 실행에 옮기는데 1단계는 제작자를 만나기 위해 은근슬쩍 비서를 따돌리고 후다닥 자기 할말만 하고 나오기. 2단계는 제작자, 투자자들이 자주 이용하는 식당에 가서 '맨하탄 멜로디'라는 뮤지컬이 공연된다는 허위사실 유포 전술. 하지만 어느 곳에서도 연락이 없자 3단계는 실행조차 하지 못한다. 고향으로 돌아가지 않은 피기는 제니와 커밋 사이를 의심하지만 오해는 풀어지고 제니의 식당에서 함께 일하게 된다. 유명한 제작자 버나드 크로프트의 아들 로니 크로프트가 제작하겠다는 얘기를 들은 커밋은 먼저 피기한테 이 기쁜 소식을 전하고 뿔뿔이 흩어진 친구들을 불러모으라고 한다. 하지만 너무 기쁜 나머지 신호등을 보지 못하고 사고를 당해 기억상실증에 걸리고 마는데...

Instrument is a documentary film directed by Jem Cohen about the band Fugazi. Cohen's relationship with band member Ian MacKaye extends back to the 1970s when the two met in high school in Washington, D.C.. The film takes its title from the Fugazi song of the same name, from their 1993 album, In on the Kill Taker. Editing of the film was done by both Cohen and the members of the band over the course of five years. It was shot from 1987 through 1998 on super 8, 16mm and video and is composed mainly of footage of concerts, interviews with the band members, practices, tours and time spent in the studio recording their 1995 album, Red Medicine.
