뉴욕의 시린 겨울에 코트도 없이 기타 하나 달랑 매고 매일밤 지인들의 집을 전전하는 무일푼 뮤지션 르윈. 듀엣으로 노래하던 파트너는 자살을 하고, 솔로앨범은 팔리지 않은 채 먼지만 쌓여간다. 어느 날 르윈은 클럽 밖으로 한 남자가 불러내 나갔다가 영문도 모른 채 몇대 얻어터지는 봉변을 당한다. 그의 이상한 곤란은 그때부터 본격적으로 시작된다. 남의 고양이를 실수로 잃어버리고 말더니, 하룻밤 같이 잤던 친구의 아내는 임신을 했다며 그게 네 아이인지도 모른다고 통보를 해온다. 시카고로 오디션을 보러 가던 중에는 괴이한 짝패들과 동행하게 되는데...

주인공은 마을 사람들이 하나 둘씩 이상하게 바뀌어 가는 것을 눈치챈다. 그들은 겉모습으로는 전혀 차이가 없지만 마치 정신만 바뀐 것처럼 모두들 딴 사람이 되어 버린다. 사실은 외계에서 날아 온 이상한 꽃씨가 발아하면서 마을에 점점 퍼지고, 그 꽃이 사람들이 잠 잘 때마다 그들의 신체를 복사해 내는 것이였다. 주인공은 친한 친구인 정신과 의사에게 이 사실을 이야기하지만, 친구는 집단 심리 현상일 뿐이라고 설명한다. 마침내 그 정신과 의사조차 이미 변해버린 외계인이라는 사실이 밝혀지고, 주인공을 비롯한 몇몇 사람만이 남아 필사적으로 졸음을 쫓으면서 저항하는데...

However, proceedings take an unexpected turn, resulting in a chain of supernatural events being set into motion that wreak havoc on the man's present marriage.

찰리 모랜은 마피아가 경영하는 식당의 중간 지배인이다. 웨이터인 찰리의 이종 사촌인 폴리가 팁을 중간에 빼돌려 돈을 몰래 챙긴 사실이 드러나자 찰리는 덩달아 해고된다. 이들은 이태리계로 서로에 대한 우애가 깊다. 그러나 찰리의 애인 다이앤은 폴리를 싫어한다. 찰리는 또 이혼한 부인과 아들에게 수당을 보내야 하기 때문에 돈이 많이 드는 상태에서 실직이 된 것이다. 찰리는 꿈이 다이앤과 같이 식당을 차리는 것이었는데 어느날 다이앤이 임신한 것을 알게 되고 둘은 심하게 다투게 된다. 폴리는 고리대금업자에게 5000달러를 꿔서 다른 사람들과 몰래 훌륭한 종마의 씨를 받았다는 말을 15000달러를 주고 산다. 한편 또 한탕을 모색중이던 폴리는 아일랜드계 바니라는 시계공, 찰리와 함께 악명높은 마피아 에디의 소유인 줄 모르고 금고를 턴다. 그런데 금고를 터는 중 에디한테 돈을 받는 경찰인 벙키가 들어와 실족하여 죽는사고가 일어난다. 벙키는 에디에게 돈을 우려내려고 항상 녹음기를 가지고 다니던 사람인데 찰리는 그 테잎을 빼온다. 에디는 자기 금고를 턴 범인이 폴리인 줄 알고 부하를 시켜 폴리의 엄지 손가락을 자른다. 엄지손이 잘린 폴리는 바니의 이름만 대지만 어쩔 수 없이 찰리의 이름도 대게 된다. 그 와중에 폴리가 산 경주만는 경마에서 아깝게 2등을 하고 그 반대로 돈을 건 찰리는 2만달러를 번다. 그러는 중 다이앤은 정직하지 못한 찰리와 살수 없다며 금고털이 한 돈을 가지고 나가버린다.
