영국을 대표하는 두 명의 여왕 엘리자베스와 빅토리아 인데 어렸을 때 모습은 전혀 달랐다. 엘리자베스는 왕위에 오를 가능성이 없었고 어렸을 때부터 엄청난 양의 독서와 외국어를 습득하고 독신으로 죽어 왕위가 튜더에서 스튜어트로 넘어간 반면 빅토리아는 왕위에 오르는 것이 기정사실이었고 어머니와 존 콘로이는 빅토리아 대신 섭정을 하기 위해 교육을 거의 시키지 않았으며 알버트와 결혼해서 20년동안 9명의 자녀를 두어 유럽의 왕실과 다 혼인시켰다. 왕위에 오른 후 어머니와 존 콘로이를 정치에서 제외시키고 휘그당(자유당)의 멜번 경을 수상에 위임한다. 당시 산업혁명이 한창 진행중이어서 빈민이 많았고 멜번 경은 멜서스의 이론을 따라 빈민구제에 소극적인 반면 빅토리아는 적극적이어서 정치적 견해에 차이가 있었다. 그러다가 빅토리아를 이용하려는 외삼촌인 벨기에왕 레오폴드가 소개한 알버트공과 결혼을 하지만 남편에게 권력을 나누어 주지 않는다.

Already shocked that a Muslim should be at the heart of the court the Royal family stepped in when Victoria announced her desire to knight him and they threatened to have her declared insane if she went ahead. It worked. And in 1901 after the queen's death Karim was banished from Royal circles,returning to India where he died.
