그림에 소질이 있는 동두천 출신의 칠수(박중훈)는 미국에 사는 누나의 초청장을 기다리다가 생계 수단인 극장 미술부를 그만두고, 장기 복역 중인 아버지로 인해 연좌제로 고통받는 만수(안성기)의 조수로 일한다. 신분을 속이고 여대생 지나(배종옥)와 연애를 하지만 실연을 당하고 누나로부터의 연락마저 두절되어 휘청거리던 칠수와, 아버지의 일로 마음의 안정을 찾지 못하던 만수는 거대한 간판 작업을 마친 어느 날 저녁, 옥상 광고탑에서 푸념 어린 장난을 시작한다. 그들은 옥상에서 술을 먹고 철탑으로 올라가 세상을 향해 소리를 치며 기분을 낸다. 그러나 철탑 위에서 자유를 만끽하고 노래를 부르며 춤을 추는 모습을 본 시민과 경찰은 시국 문제로 항의를 하는 시위자로 오인하고, 경찰과 기자가 도착하면서 사태는 심각한 국면으로 치닫는다. 만수는 결국 세상 속으로 뛰어내리고, 칠수는 경찰에 끌려간다.

The year is 1943 and Taiwan is under Japanese colonization. After finishing his studies in Japan, famous Taiwanese sculptor and painter Ching-Cheng Huang receives an offer to teach in Beiping Art School. He decides to visit friends and family back home before leaving for China. He boards the passenger liner "Takachiho Maru" in Kobe, Japan, with his girlfriend, a pianist. Tragically, the luxurious liner is torpedoed by an American submarine and sinks off the coast of Keelung, Taiwan. Decades later, Shou-shou, a fine art restorer with a crippling illness, finds one of Huang's paintings in an exhibition. As she restores the painting, Shou-shou learns about the artist, the stories behind his work and his death at sea. She recreates the story of the painting "Woman in Black", and romantically imagines the ways the artist painted his girlfriend. 프랑스 소설가 발자크의 소설 에서 영감을 얻어 제작한 작품으로 그 내용의 줄거리가 거의 흡사하다. 줄거리 자체만으로는 단순하며 상투적인 모습을 보여주지만 쟈끄 리베트 감독의 손을 거쳐서 탄생한 은 예술작품에 대한 감독의 실험정신을 영화 속 주인공 프뤼노페르를 통해 재현하는 작품이다. 주인공 프뤼노페르는 10년 전 아내인 리즈(제인 버킨 분)를 모델로 그리다가 실패하고 만 미완의 그림 '미녀 싸움꾼 (La Belle Noiseuse)'을 다시 그리는 작업을 시작하게 된다. 새로운 모델은 그를 찾아온 젊은 화가 니꼴라의 여자친구인 마리안느(엠마뉴엘 베아르 분)가 되며, 이 작업은 화가와 모델의 끊임없는 자아찾기와 작품에 대한 열망, 그와 연결된 인물들 사이의 관계와 설정이 어떻게 변화되어 가는지를 섬세하게 표현해 낸다.
