거식증을 앓는 스무 살 엘런. 곡절 많고 힘겨운 그녀의 인생은 이상한 의사가 운영하는 공동체를 만나면서 달라진다. 앙상한 엘런의 삶에도 새살이 돋을 수 있을까?

First the atomic war broke out, new machines were made, dead birds appeared. In 1999, a bacteriological warfare began, there were sandstorms and giant locust infestations; the human tissue was transformed and a new being, once legendary, now real, emerged: the vampire. Only Robert Neville, the last man on Earth, remains unpolluted, living in constant struggle with the new inhabitants of the planet.

여행에서 돌아온 "릴리"는 쌍둥이 동생 "로이"가 집을 나갔음을 알게된다. 릴리는 로이에게 계속 메세지를 남기지만 아무런 소식이 없고 릴리의 눈치만 살필뿐 시원스레 이유를 말해주지않는 부모님과 소식이 없는 동생의 걱정으로 그녀는 음식도 거부한채 하루하루 말라가기만 한다. 급기야 정신병동에 입원을 하게된 릴리. 병원의 어떤 처방으로도 아무런 진척을 보이지않던 그녀는 어느날 도착한 로이의 편지로 인해 다시금 힘을 내기 시작한다. 퇴원을 한 후 자신의 삶을 살아가는 릴리.. 여전히 아들을 찾으려는 노력을 하지않는 부모..회신할 수 있는 주소도 없이 주기적으로 날아오는 동생의 편지.. 그녀는 믿고 싶지 않은 진실이 숨어있음을 조금씩 인식하게 된다. 슬픔에 빠져있을 새도 없이 남은 자식의 상처를 걱정하는 부모... 잔잔하게 흐르는 음악과 서로를 배려하는 눈빛들이 따뜻함을 느끼게 하는 영화다.

라이언은 12살 때 비행기에서 우연히 제니퍼란 동갑내기 여자아이의 옆자리에 앉게 된다. 그리고 이때부터 이 둘의 운명적 만남이 계속된다. 고등학교때 이웃 고등학교간의 미식축구경기에서 다시 만난 이들은 하나는 치어리더로 또 하나는 많은 사람들 앞에서 우스갯거리가 되는 덜떨어진 고등학생이 되어 있다. 두 사람은 서로의 첫 만남을 기억해내곤 다시 곧바로 헤어진다. 세번째의 만남은 버클리 대학에서이다.

거식증과 정신병력을 지닌 한 여인이 정신과 진료소에서 탈출하여 다리 난간에 서서 자살을 시도하지만 지나가던 젊은 남자에 의해 구출된다. 여인은 부모에게 돌아가지만, 이내 부모가 항간을 시끄럽게 달구던 연쇄살인범에게 살해당하는 모습을 목격하면서 트라우마에 빠진다. 이제 여인과 그녀의 새로운 연인은 이 사건을 직접 조사하고, 연속살인의 피해자들과 자신들이 관련이 있음을 알게 된다.
