정신이 오락가락한 80대 노파가 사는 조용한 집에 마커스가 방을 구하기 위해 찾아온다. 악기 연주 연습을 하는 사람이라고 소개하지만 실제로는 현금수송차량을 털 계획을 세우고 있는 악당이다. 각자 악기가방을 들고 모인 5인조 강도들은 교묘한 수법으로 현금수송차를 털고 그 돈가방을 할머니를 이용해 그 집으로 옮기는데 성공한다. 그들의 강도짓은 완전범죄로 보이는 듯 하지만 돈가방을 갖고 떠나려 하자 의외의 사건이 벌어지고 이들은 장애물이 되는 할머니를 살해하고 떠날 계획을 세우는데...

90년대 중반 오염이 심해진 캘리포니아주에서는 전기자동차 진흥 법안을 만든다. 이에 따라 GM에서는 EV-1 이라는 양산형 전기자동차를 생산한다. 미래의 석유자원 고갈과 환경오염 문제를 해결하기 위한 획기적인 발명품으로 각광받았던 EV-1을 GM은 무슨 이유에서인지 다시 회수하기 시작했고, 회수한 차를 폐차시켜 버리기 시작한다. 영화는 EV-1의 사례를 중심으로 전기자동차의 숨겨진 비밀을 자동차 제조업체와 석유산업의 로비관계를 통해 밝히고 있다. 그 외에도 전기자동차의 개발에 착수했던 진정한 배경과 의미, 생산이 중단된 이유에 대해서도 많은 자료와 관련 인물들의 인터뷰를 통해 진실을 파헤친다.

해들리 빌이라는 마을의 자동차 공장에서 공장 감독을 맡고 있는 헌트는 망해가는 공장을 살리기 위해 새로운 해결책을 모색한다. 그리고 그가 내린 결론은 잘 나가는 일본 기업의 경영기법을 도입하자는 것. 그는 일본의 아산 모터사를 방문해 해들리 빌에 현지 생산 공장을 세울 것을 권유한다. 그러나 일본의 경영진은 헌트의 제안을 쉽게 받아들이지 않는다. 의문점을 던지는 일본인 경영진들에게 그는 기막힌 제안으로 설득해 내는데 성공한다. 헌트의 기발한 아이디어와 언변에 설득당해 일본인 경영진들은 결국 해들리 빌에 공장을 설립한다. 드디어 공장은 가동되지만 헌트의 생각처럼 일이 잘 풀리지는 않는다. 원리원칙과 근면을 추구하는 일본인과 자유롭고 개성을 중시하는 미국 노동자들의 문화적, 정서적 차이로 곧 분쟁들이 발생한다.

소년시절 자동차를 본 이후 혁신적인 자동차를 만들겠다는 꿈을 가지게된 터커는 더 빨리, 더 안전하게 달릴 수 있는 미래형 자동차 개발에 착수한다. 가족을 비롯 유능한 세일즈맨 에이브, 많은 기술자들의 든든한 후원으로 시작학 작업은 그러나 3대 자동차 메이커 포드, GM, 크라이슬라와 결탁한 관료주의의 벽에 부딪고 만다.터커가 새 차의 광고 홍보차 자리를 비운 사이, 메이저사의 압력으로 차의 설계가 바뀌고, 의회의 조사위원회는 터커를 사기혐의로 고소하기에 이른다. 무서운 음모에 대항하는 방법은 한가지. 최종판결이 나기 전 그가 차를 만들어낼 의도가 있다는 증거로 새 차 50대를 생산해야 하는 것이다.

The village, hitherto famous mostly for its sauerkraut and the “Radegast” beer was thus turned into an industrial zone – the largest greenfield investment project in the Czech Republic’s history. Nonetheless, for a long time many farmers resisted selling the land upon which the factory was now standing. Eventually, they all succumbed under the pressure from the neighbours, and even the anonymous death threats. The filmmakers returned to Nošovice two years after the dramatic property buyouts, at the time when the factory has just started churning out cheap cars. Combining the perspectives of seven characters, they have composed a portrayal of a place suddenly changed beyond recognition that is playful and chilling at the same time: a politically engaged absurd flick about a field that yields cars.
