Charlie Parker: Bird Songs (2021)

노르망디 해안의 어느 휴양지로 일단의 사람들이 휴가를 위해 몰려오고 영화의 끝에서 그들은 다시 원래 왔던 곳으로 돌아간다. 자끄 타티 감독의 영화에 등장하는 대중적인 캐릭터 윌로씨가 처음 등장하는 영화. 휴가철이 되자 브르타뉴 해변에는 휴양객들이 몰려든다. 그런데 그들의 휴가는 왠지 권태로워 보인다. 어느 날 그 곳에 신사적이고 점잖은 듯 보이는 윌로씨가 도착하며 소동이 일어난다. 영화는 일관된 이야기가 이어지기보다는 그저 휴가에 따라 벌어지는 소동을 보여준다. 윌로씨라는 인물이 황당한 행동을 하는 장면과 그가 벌인 일을 당한 휴양객들이 어리둥절해 하는 에피소드로 나뉜다. 사람들에게 잘 하려고 하지만 늘 사고를 일으키는 윌로씨는 그 곳의 천덕꾸러미 신세가 되고 만다. 그는 늘 한 발짝 늦는 바람에 세상과 조화되지 못하고 늘 겉도는 인생이다. 그리고 세상은 그런 그를 배려하지 않는다. 슬랩스틱 코미디의 대중적인 호소력과 모더니즘적 실험을 융합한 영화들을 만들며 작가의 위치에 올라선 감독 자크 타티는 윌로씨라는 캐릭터를 만들어 내며 그 후 수 편의 영화를 만들었다(이 엉뚱하기 그지없는 아저씨 윌로씨를 연기하는 이는 자크 타티 감독 본인이다). 훗날 트뤼포는 '드와넬' 시리즈 중 한 편에서 윌로씨를 카메오 등장시키기도 했다.

착한 천성의 셀리(우피 골드버그)는 열네 살 때 의붓 아버지의 아이를 둘이나 낳는다. 셀리의 유일한 낙은 두 살 아래 여동생 네티(아코슈 부시아)와 서로 의지하며 다정하게 살아가는 것이다. 그러던 중 미스터(대니 글로버)라는 남자가 네티에게 청혼을 한다. 그러나 의붓 아버지는 네티가 너무 어리다며 대신 셀리를 데려가라고 한다. 셀리는 미스터의 아내가 되나, 미스터의 전처가 낳은 아이들과 미스터의 난폭한 성격 때문에 비참한 삶을 살게 되는데...

아멜리에의 프로듀서가 전세계 최고의 감독 20명과 찍은 18편의 옴니버스 영화로, 파리를 배경으로 한 18가지의 색다른 사랑 이야기를 담고 있다. 5분의 제한 시간 안에서 펼쳐지는 이야기들의 한가지 공통점은 바로 '사랑의 도시, 파리'라는 주제이다. 각각의 감독들은 이 주제를 받아들이고 자신들만의 개성을 듬뿍 담은 작품들을 탄생시켰다. 마치 를 연상시키는 내레이션으로 연결된 18편의 짧은 영화들은 파리를 배경으로 펼쳐지는 갖가지 훈훈한 사랑의 기운을 전달하고 있다. 파리 시내 20개 구 중 한 곳을 골라 최소한의 비용으로 5분 동안 사랑이야기를 찍기. 에 참여한 20명의 감독에게 주어진 공통조건이었다. 몽마르트 언덕, 에펠탑, 차이나타운, 마레, 센 강변 등 파리 곳곳을 배경으로, 현대 파리의 일상과 주인공들의 천차만별 사랑, 그리고 세계 곳곳의 감독들이 파리에 보내는 사랑이 함께 어우러진다. 감독들 각자의 개성과 세계적인 스타들의 모습이 몽타주된 감미로운 영화.

1930년대, 재즈기타리스트 에밋 레이는 출중한 연주 실력으로 명성을 얻지만, 돈을 헤프게 쓰고, 한 여자와 사랑에 빠지는 것은 경력에 해가 된다며 오입질을 일삼는 바람둥이로 살고 있다. 게다가 쓰레기더미 속 쥐를 향해 총질을 하는 괴팍한 취미까지 가지고 있는데, 결정적으로 최고의 기타리스트 장고 라인하르트에 이어 언제나 2인자로 불린다. 그런 에밋 앞에 말 못하는 세탁부 헤이티가 나타난다. 허구의 재즈기타리스트 에밋 레이에 대한 이야기로, 우디 앨런은 페데리코 펠리니의 (1954)과 재즈음악에 대한 자신의 무한한 사랑을 담아냈다. 헤이티 역의 사만다 모튼은 마치 의 젤소미나를 보는 듯하다. 하지만 에밋의 마지막 행보는 역시 앨런답다. A musician tries to get by working several jobs.

살인 청부업자 제프는 돈을 받고 나이트클럽 주인을 살해한다. 그러나 경찰의 신속한 수배망에 걸려 수 많은 용의자 가운데 하나가 된다. 살인을 하기 전 애인 잔과 치밀한 알리바이를 짜놓았기 때문에 문제는 없으나, 유일한 목격자인 클럽 피아니스트 발레리가 그에겐 가장 위험한 증인이다. 그러나 증인으로 불려나온 발레리는 뜻밖에도 제프를 처음 보는 사람이라고 증언해 준다. 증거가 없어 제프를 놓아주면서도 서장은 너무 완벽한 알리바이에 의심을 품고 그를 미행하게 한다. 한편 청부살인의 나머지 돈을 받으러 갔던 제프는 도리어 경찰에 수배 중인 자신을 이롭지 않게 생각한 의뢰인이 보낸 암살자에게 한쪽 팔에 저격당한다. 그 총잡이를 고용한 배후 인물을 찾으려는 제프에게 경찰의 포위망이 좁혀져 온다.

The musical traditions of the eastern and western worlds are bridged through the improvisations of Bombay, India-born percussionist/vocalist Trilok Gurtu. Gurtu’s mastery of post-bop jazz has not gone unnoticed. Downbeat magazine named him “best percussionist” in three critic and popularity polls and proclaimed, “musically, the world is his stage”. Zawinul is onstage with the WDR Big Band from Germany and a special international rhythm section. The music is a tribute to the pioneering 1970s fusion collective Weather Report, originally with Wayne Shorter on sax, Zawinul on keys, and later Jaco Pastorius on bass (among other personnel). Zawinul and the WDR play "Brown Street" and "Carnavalito." Arranger Vince Mendoza re-imagines this colorful, small-group music for Europe's longest-lived jazz orchestra. And they can play!

When the Lutheran pastor Roland retires, the young priest Roll shall replace him. He plays the trumpet, loves Jazz and his methods are unconventional: From the first day on he offends the village's notables, but he doesn't care so much since he especially targets the youths, wants them to get back to the church again. With music as his weapon of choice and the Africa Shrine a temple of protest song, Femi continues his father’s fight, railing against the corrupt Nigerian government and staunchly defending PanAfricanism. Capturing this experience through interviews, street scenes, and the music itself, Live At The Shrine captures the spirit, passion, and hope, of a man and a people who are fighting.
