미조리주를 누비던 갱이었으나 무법자의 생활에 회의를 느낀 맥클린토크(제임스 스튜어트 분)는 스스로를 변화시키고자 농부들을 이끌고 오레곤주로 향하는 안내인을 맡아 험난한 여정에 나선다. 여정 중에 말도둑이었던 콜(아서 케네디 분)의 도움을 받게 되는데, 콜은 맥클린토크의 과거를 알고 있는 인물로 이 일을 계기로 맥클린토크와 함께 여정을 떠나게 된다. 그러나 포틀랜드에 도착한 스튜어트는 농부들에게 물건을 실어 날라다 주겠다고 한 약속을 깨뜨려버린 상인의 사기극에 휘말리게 된다. 정상적인 방법으로는 물건을 되찾아올 수 없음을 아는 맥클린토크는 인간의 모럴인 변할 수 없다고 생각하며 끝없이 맥클린토크를 의심하는 농부들의 지도자와 함께 상인의 식량과 말을 훔쳐 농부들에게 되돌려 주고, 그 과정에서 콜이 상인에게 보급품을 팔아먹었다는 사실을 알게 된다. 콜은 자신이 훔친 물건들을 되돌려 받기 위해 농부와 그의 딸을 인질로 삼고, 맥클린도크는 예전의 동료였던 콜과 대결을 벌이게 된다. 맥클린토크는 농부들에 대한 충성심과 어두운 자신의 과거에 대한 구원, 그리고 복수를 위해 총을 든다.
