프로 범죄자 & 첫발을 내딛은 신입 범죄자 인생을 바꿀 금괴를 훔쳐내기 위한 믿음과 배신의 판이 벌어진다! 교도소에 처음 입소한 19세 청년 ‘JR’은 범죄 세계에서 이미 이름을 알린 인물 ‘브랜든’을 만난다. 어리숙하지만 영리한 ‘JR’을 눈여겨보던 ‘브랜든’은 위험으로 가득 찬 교도소 생활을 편하게 만들어주는 대신, 그에게 자신의 계획에 협조할 것을 제안한다. 바로 먼저 출소하는 ‘JR’이 자신의 교도소 탈출을 돕고, 이후 함께 금괴 주조 시설을 습격해 금괴를 훔쳐내는 것. 배신이 판치는 범죄 세계, 두 남자는 자신의 인생을 바꿀 금괴를 훔쳐내기 위해 믿을 수도 의심할 수도 없는 서로의 손을 잡게 되는데...

엄마가 약물남용으로 세상을 떠나자 열일곱 소년 조쉬 J 코디(제임스 프레체빌)는 멜버른에 살고 있는 할머니 스머프(재키 위버)의 집으로 옮겨와 생활하게 된다. 함께 생활하게 된 할머니와 삼촌들은 약물 판매와 절도 등 범죄를 업으로 하는 범죄 가족. 살아남기 위해 J는 그들의 범죄에 동참한다. 형사 네이던 (가이 피어스)은 J를 경찰의 보호 아래 두려고 하지만 부패 경찰, 잇속만 챙기는 변호사들 사이에서의 상황도 어렵기만 하다. 가족과 경찰의 갈등이 고조되고 조쉬는 동물의 왕국과도 같은 이곳에서 살아남기 위해서는 누구의 도움도 없이 혼자서 살아남아야 한다는 결론을 내린다.

무대는 핵전쟁이 끝난 이후의 호주, 세계는 방사능에 오염되어 있고, 그속에서도 인간의 애증과 갈등의 관계들은 여전하다. 그 중 가장 인상적인 대목이 바로 어딘가에서 발신되는 모르스 신호를 추적해 가는 미해군 잠수함 승무원들의 모습이다. 그 신호는 분명히 방사능으로 전멸해버린 도시에서 나오고 있다. 혹시 그곳에 생존자가 있어서 그 신호를 발신하고 있다면, 인류의 생존가능성을 찾을 수 있으리라는 마지막 기대를 가지고 그들은 출항한다. 방사능을 피해서 잠수 상태로 항해하여 육중한 보호복을 입고서 그들이 도달한 곳에는 사람의 흔적은 없고 모르스 발신기에 무언가가 걸려서 바람에 흔들리며 불규칙적인 신호를 내고 있었다. 텅빈 대도시에서 느껴지는 그 엄청난 무게의 절망감. 그 이상의 메시지가 어디 있을까? 라스트 씬은 어떤가? 잠수함의 승무원들은 모여서 논란을 벌인 끝에 결정을 내린다. 어차피 죽을거라면, 사랑하는 가족들이 숨진 고향에 가서 죽겠노라고. 그 '고향'을 향해 잠수함은 출항을 한다.

선천적으로 앞을 못보는 마틴(Martin: 휴고 위빙 분)은 병약한 홀어머니 밑에서 성장하는데 자신이 장애아이기 때문에 어머니가 자신을 미워하고 미워하기 때문에 자기에게 진실을 말해주지 않고 모든 걸 속인다고 오해한다. 이처럼 심각한 피해 의식은 젊은 나이에 요절한 어머니의 죽음마저도 자기를 버리고 떠나기 위해서 조작된 거짓말이라고 믿게 만든다. 세상의 모든 걸 불신하는 마틴은 주위 사람들이 자신을 속이지 못하게 보이지는 않지만 육감으로 느끼는 주변의 풍경들을 사진으로 찍어서 증거로 남겨둔다. 그리고 이 증거품인 사진을 솔직하게 말해 줄만한 정직한 사람을 찾던 중 식당의 주방에서 일하는 앤디(Andy: 러셀 크로우 분)라는 착한 청년을 만나게 된다. 마틴은 자신이 찍은 사진과 자기에게 충실한 개 그리고 자기가 찍은 사진을 정직하게 설명해주는 앤디만을 믿고 의지하며 산다. 마틴을 사랑하기 때문에 마틴의 집에서 3년 반 동안 가정부로 일해 온 실리아(Celia: 제네비에브 피콧 분)는 자신보다 앤디를 더 믿는 것에 심한 질투를 느껴서 앤디를 모함하기 위한 계략으로 앤디를 유혹하는데...
