A subtle account of the chimpanzees' behaviour in Burgers Dierenpark in Arnhem, on the occasion of the publication of the book Chimpansee Politiek by ethologist Dr. Frans de Waal. A unique experiment shows us how complex the social strategies in the community of this fascinating anthropoid ape are. Haanstra managed to capture almost all aspects of chimpanzee behaviour: display of skill, teasing and pestering, grooming, resting, playing, motherly behaviour, submission, sex and violence. Eventually, the film was also screened to the apes.

Showcased in beautiful IMAX format, this documentary takes viewers into the hearts, minds and world of chimpanzees as it profiles legendary scientist Dr. Jane Goodall's work among the chimps at Gombe Park on Africa's Lake Tanganyka. Dr. Goodall and other researchers give us an up-close look at the daily lives of the Gombe chimp families -- Fifi and sons Freud and alpha male Frodo, along with Gremlin, Gaia and the endearing Galahad.

위스콘신 심리연구소에 버질이라는 이름의 침팬지가 보내져 온다. 연구원 테리는 버질이 전에 수화를 배운 것을 알게 되어 인간과 침팬지 사이에 의사소통이 가능하다는 것을 실증한다. 어느날 미공군 기지로 보내진 버질은 핵 전쟁시 공격받은 비행사의 생태와 생존 가능성을 실험하는 프로젝트 X의 실험 대상이 된다는 사실을 알고 경악한다.

1920년대 뉴욕. 트루디(르네 루소 분)는 동물에 대한 각별한 사랑으로 유명한 사교계 인사이다. 그녀의 집은 마치 동물원을 방불케 한다. 말, 거위, 각종 열대어, 뱀 등 그녀의 동물에 대한 사랑은 그 종류를 가리지 않는다. 트루디의 동물에 대한 사랑을 완벽하게 이해하는 사람은 그녀의 남편, 빌(로비 콜트랜 분) 뿐이다. 트루디에게는 특별히 자식같은 네마리의 침팬지가 있다. 트루디는 이들에게 옷을 만들어 입히고 식탁에서의 예절, 크로켓 치는 법 등 마치 부모가 보통 어린 아이들에게 하는 것과 다를 바 없이 모든 것을 가르친다. 어느날 트루디는 심하게 앓고 있는 어린 고릴라 한마디를 데려온다. 그녀의 애정어린 보살핌으로 새끼 고릴라는 건강한 모습을 되찾고 한 가족이 되어간다. 트루디가 그에게 붙여준 이름은 버디. 그러나 버디의 덩치가 점점 커지면서 문제가 발생하기 시작한다. 트루디와 그 식구들에게는 여전히 귀여운 버디이지만 다른 사랍들에게는 공포의 대상일 뿐이다. 시카고에서 열리는 세계 동물 박람회에 참가한 버디는 본의아니게 행사장을 엉망으로 만들고 사람들에게 위협적인 존재로 비춰진다. 이 사건을 계기로 트루디는 더 이상 버디가 인간 사회에 남아있을 수 없다는 사실을 깨닫고 중대한 결정을 내린다. 그를 자연으로 돌려보내기로. 버디는 그가 태어난 자연으로 돌아가 평화를 되찾는다.
