스키드로우의 꽃가게 점원인 시모아 크레르몽(릭 모라니스 분)은 어릴 때 자신을 데려다 키운 주인 마슈닝(빈센트 가드니아 분)에게 하인처럼 혹사당한다. 그런 시모아의 유일한 안식처는 여점원 오드리(엘렌 그린 분)지만 그녀에게는 안타깝게도 오린 스크리베리(스티브 마틴 분)라는 애인이 있다. 어떤 일식날 시모아는 이상한 꽃을 사서 '오드리2'라는 이름을 붙여 기른다. 그 독특한 모습의 '오드리2'에 대한 소문은 금방 퍼져 가게는 고객들로 연일 붐비고 시모아는 매스컴의 세례를 받는 유명인이 된다. 그런데 어느날 시모아가 무심코 오드리 2를 만지자 그것이 손가락끝에 달라 붙어 피를 쪽쪽 빠는 것이 아닌가. 알고보니 그것은 흡혈식물이었던 것. 식물은 점점 커지면서 더 많은 피를 요구하는데...

2차 세계대전이 한창이던 1944년 다뉴브강 근처의 제 17 포로수용소. 크리스마스를 일주일 앞둔 밤에 4막사의 미군포로들이 침대에서 일어난다. 두 명의 동료를 탈출시키기 위해서이다. 막사장과 감시인 사이에 이야기가 오고간 후, 두 사람은 난로 밑으로 난 통로를 이용해 막사 밖으로 빠져나간다. 탈출을 지켜보던 세프톤은 탈출에 실패할 것이라며 수용소에서 돈 대용으로 쓰이는 담배로 내기를 건다. 이에 다른 포로들은 반대편에 걸지만 결국 탈출 실패로 세프톤이 이긴다. 담배, 술 등의 물건으로 편안한 수용생활을 즐기는 세프톤은 다른 포로들에게 기회주의자로만 보일 뿐이다. 게다가 탈출 실패 후 스파이가 막사 내에 있을 거라는 말에 동료들의 시선도 곱지 않다. 그러던 어느 날 프랑크푸르트 기차역을 폭파한 던바 대위가 수용소에 들어오는데 누군가의 제보로 폭파범인 게 알려져 수용소장에게 끌려간다. 이 사건으로 오해를 받게 된 세프톤은 다른 포로들에게 억울한 뭇매를 맞게 되는데...

600년 후의 지구, 한 무리의 사람들이 '액시스'라고 하는 거대한 나무에 의지해 그 속에서 살아간다. 그들은 자신들이 받드는 신을 위해 수액을 채집해 바친다. 그러나 무슨 이유인지, 나무가 점점 시들어가면서 수액도 말라간다. 그곳에서 살아가는 한 소녀 '케냐'는 항상 또 다른 세상이 있다고 믿으며 그곳을 찾으려 하고 있다. 우연한 사건으로 마을에서 도망치게 된 케냐는 외계 생명체 '베카노이'인을 만난다. 그리고 인간보다 훨씬 더 뛰어난 지능을 지닌 벌레의 도움으로 위험에 처한 마을 사람들을 구하러 나선다. 사람들이 믿고 있는 신이란 사실, '베카노이'를 없애려고 하는 외계 생명체였던 것. 그리고 그 '베카노이'와 '액시스'는 동일한 존재였다. '베카노이'가 사라지면, '액시스' 또한 사라지게 되는 것이다. '베카노이'의 선택을 받은 인간, 케냐는 사람들을 구하기 위해 최선의 선택을 해야만 한다.

하비슨 여사의 그린하우스에서 수선공인 프레드가 화초 가지에 찔린다. 얼마 후 그는 맥박이 빨라지고 고열에 신음하며 쓰러지고, 곧 병원으로 옮겨지지만 그의 몸은 점점 썩어 들어가고 입에서 끔찍하게 생긴 벌레가 기어나온다. 여의사인 레이첼은 정체불명의 이 벌레를 실험실에 보관한다.

카메라없이 처음으로 만들어진 작품. 실제로 필름 위에 나방의 날개, 꽃잎 조각, 풀 등을 콜라주 형태로 붙여놓고 일련의 프린트 과정을 거친 작품으로 널리 알려져 있다. 이미 죽어버린 생명체가 작가의 손길을 거쳐 스크린 위에 다시 투영될 때의 빛의 숨결을 받아 새로운 생명으로 환생한다는 역설적인 메시지를 지니고 있다. 바로 빛의 깜박거림으로 인하여 영사기를 통해 보여지는 나방의 날개는 마치 살아서 움직이는 것같은 환상을 관객들에게 제공한다.
