중년의 나이에 접어든 엠마뉴엘은 성문제로 고민하는 이들을 위한 상담소를 운영하여 '가상현실'이란 컴퓨터 프로그램을 개발해 낸다. 이 프로그램은 자기가 원하는 상대와 가상의 성관계를 맺음으로써 성문제의 고민을 말끔히 해결할 수 있는 프로그램이다. 그러던 어느날, 엠마뉴엘이 예전 기숙사 학교를 다닐 당시 절친한 친구였던 소피가 찾아와 고민을 호소해 온다. 소피는 막 성에 눈뜨던 사춘기 시절 엠마뉴엘로부터 프란츠라는 남학생을 소개받았는데 두려움으로 거부했던 경험이 있다. 그후 엠마뉴엘은 카를로스라는 남자를 다시 소개시켜 주는데 소피는 그에게도 알 수 없는 두려움을 느껴 거부하고 만다. 외교관 딸이었던 소피는 그 뒤 아버지를 따라 이스탄불에 갔다가 우연히 카를로스를 만난다. 그런데 불행하게도 카를로스에게 성폭행을 당해 순결을 잃게 된다. 소피는 그 일이 있은 후 가슴속에서 남자들에 대한 증오심을 갖고 독신으로 살아오고 있다. 소피에게서 그동안의 일을 모두 알게 된 엠마뉴엘은 자신이 개발한 '가상현실' 프로그램을 권하게 된다. 덕분에 환상속에서 과거 기숙사 시절의 두려움을 지우고 프란츠와 관계를 가진 소피는 자신감을 얻어 생활의 기쁨을 알게되고, 결국은 이로 인해 현실에서도 프란츠와 사랑을 하기에 이른다.
