총이라면 위험하다며 무조건 반대하는 어른들을 이해할 수 없는 랄피(피터 빌링스리 분)는 크리스마스 선물로 총알을 넣고 쏘는 카빈 총을 갖고 싶어한다. 엄마와 선생님,산타클로스 모두 총은 선물로 안된다는 말을 들은 랄피는 크게 낙담한다. 크리스마스 날 선물 꾸러미를 푸는 랄피는 심드렁하다. 그러나 아버지(대렌 맥가빈 분)는 어머니(멜린다 딜론 분)도 모르게 산타클로스가 갖다 놓은 것처럼 꾸며 랄피가 그토록 가지고 싶어하던 총을 랄피에게 준다.

대만에서 뉴욕으로 건너와 부동산 딜러로 일하며 잘나가고 있는 웨이퉁(조문선)은 애인 사이먼과 동거하며 행복한 나날을 보내고 있다. 이 사실을 모르는 웨이퉁의 부모님은 그가 결혼하여 손주를 안겨주길 고대하고 있다. 이에 웨이퉁과 사이먼은 부모님과 자신 모두를 만족시킬 방안을 생각해낸다. 웨이퉁이 관리하는 건물의 세입자인 웨이웨이와 위장결혼을 하자는 것. 미국에 체류하기 위해 영주권이 필요했던 웨이웨이는 그들의 제안에 흔쾌히 수락한다. 아들의 결혼 소식에 뉴욕까지 찾아온 부모님은 대만의 전통 혼례식을 치를 것을 제안하고, 어쩔 수 없이 결혼 피로연까지 치르게 된다. 세 사람의 완벽한 연기로 위장결혼은 성공한 듯 보였지만, 결혼 피로연에서 발생한 예상치 못한 사고로 그들의 관계는 흔들리기 시작하는데…

150년의 유구한 역사를 자랑하는 미주리주의 블레인에서 성대한 축제를 계획한다. 아마추어들인 주민들이 모두 참여하여 마을의 오랜 역사를 되새겨 보면서 현재를 생각하고 미래를 계획하는 내용의 뮤지컬을 무대에 올리기로 한 것. 직접 각본을 쓰고 감독과 안무까지 책임지게 된 코키(Corky St. Clair: 크리스토퍼 게스트 분)에게는 이 뮤지컬이 일생일대 최대의 기획이다. 각양각색의 직업을 가진 이들이 레드, 화이트, 그리고 블레인이라는 제목의 쇼 오디션에 참여한다. 치과의사인 퍼얼 박사를 비롯 여행안내원인 론(Ron Albertson: 프레드 윌라드 분)과 쉴라(Sheila Albertson: 캐서린 오하라 분) 부부, 데일리 퀸인, 리비 매 브라운(Libby Mae Brown: 파커 포세이 분), 그리고 은퇴한 박제사까지. 이들은 스스로 재능과 끼를 완벽하게 갖추었다고 믿고있는 아마추어 배우들이다. 우여곡절 끝에 캐스팅을 완료하고 연습에 몰두하는 코키와 배우들. 그러나 이들의 작멈이 순탄치만은 않다. 우선 소요 비용에서부터 문제가 발생한다. 이리저리 돈 쓸 곳은 늘어만 가는데, 시장은 10만 달러의 비용을 청구한 서류를 요구하며, 시예산으로는 15,000 달러 이상이 불가능함을 통보해 온 것. 본인들의 생각과는 달리 형편없는 실력의 아마추어 배우들의 연기력도 코키를 힘빠지게 만든다. 그러나 브로드웨이의 전설적인 프로듀서 거프만을 초대해 쇼를 감상케 할 계획을 갖고있는 코키는 계속해서 배우들을 독려한다.
