The Dalton gang escape to a nearby town after a train robbery goes south, but they are met by a coven of witches with sinister plans for the unsuspecting outlaws.

1890년대 미국 서부. 부치 캐시디와 선댄스 키드는 갱단을 이끌고 은행만 전문적으로 터는 은행 강도들로, 사람들을 해치는 것을 최대한으로 피하는 양심적인 강도들이다. 보스인 부치는 머리 회전이 빠르고 인심은 좋지만 총솜씨는 별로 없고 반면, 선댄스는 부치와는 정반대로 구변은 별로 없지만 총솜씨는 당해낼 사람이 없다. 미래에 대한 희망도 없이 돈이 생기면 써버리고 없으면 은행을 터는 그들이지만 세상을 바라보는 눈은 매우 낙천적이며 낭만적이기도 하다. 그러다 모처럼 몇차례 열차를 턴 것이 화근이 되어 추적을 받게 된 부치와 선댄스, 선댄스의 애인 에타는 하는 수 없이 볼리비아로 간다. 하지만 볼리비아는 그들이 생각했던 것보다 가난한 나라로 영어가 통하지 않아 부치와 선댄스는 에타에게서 스페인어를 배운다. 볼리비아에서도 털고 도망치고를 반복하는 은행 털이가 순조롭게 이어지는데..

1880년대의 혼란스런 미국 몬태나주. 이 곳은 당시 미국의 서부 지역 중 가장 험악한 곳으로 악명이 높았다. 그곳의 남자들은 먹고 살기 위해서, 그리고 자신들이 가진 걸 지키기 위해서 치열하게 살아간다. 그 가운데서도 과격하기 이를 데 없는 톰 로건(잭 니콜슨)은 말 도둑 일당의 두목이다. 그는 오래전부터 악명을 떨쳐 온 악당 중의 악당이다. 목장주인 데이빗 브랙스톤(존 맥리엄)은 자신의 말들을 지키기 위해 리 클레이튼(말론 브란도)을 고용한다. 독특한 성격의 총잡이인 클레이튼은 냉정하게 말 도둑들을 하나둘 처단해 나간다. 거의 미치광이 살인자에 가까운 클레이튼은 잔인무도한 현상금 사냥꾼이나 마찬가지다. 소도둑 무리를 추적하여 괴롭힌 뒤 차례차례 죽여 나가는 그의 모습은 광기에 가깝다. 마침내, 클레이톤과 로건이 맞서게 되고 로건은 위기에 처한다. 두 사람의 기 대결은 한치의 양보도 없어서, 절벅거리는 욕조에서 만난 두 사람은 계속 서로를 조롱하는데, 클레이튼이 갑자기 물에서 일어나 로건에게 등 뒤에서 쏴보라고 도전하기도 한다. 그렇게 그들의 싸움은 쉽게 끝나지 않는다.

링크 존스(게리 쿠퍼 분)는 마을에서 가르칠 선생을 데려오기 위해 주민들이 모아준 소중한 돈을 가지고 열차에 몸을 싣는다. 처음 보는 열차의 위용에 잠시 멈칫하지만 의연하게 열차에 탑승해서 여정을 시작한다. 그런데 열차가 목재와 물을 싣기 위해 정차하는 동안 무장 강도단의 습격을 받는다. 열차는 링크 존스를 비롯해서 열차의 승객인 빌리(줄리 런던 분), 그리고 샘(아서 오코넬)을 남겨둔 채 가까스로 빠져나간다. 남겨진 셋은 일행이 되어 인가를 향해 걷기 시작하는데 가수 출신의 아름다운 여인 빌리는 링크의 사내다운 풍모에 호감을 느낀다. 링크는 외떨어진 집을 발견하자 경계를 하며 빌리와 샘을 대피시킨 채 홀로 집으로 들어서지만 빈집이 아니었다. 열차를 습격했던 토빈 일당의 거처였던 것. 그리고 빌리와 샘까지 토빈 일당의 볼모로 붙잡히면서 링크가 살인과 도적질을 일삼던 토빈의 패거리였음이 밝혀지는데...

The six split up and while they are hiding out awaiting the rendezvous to divide the loot, Hark is cornered, framed and sent to prison. He is released after two-and-a-half years and sets out to find Katy and Nolan and get his share of the loot.

The Goss family live on a farm they call the dust bowl where the wind blows during the day and the coyotes howl at night. When the train is robbed, everyone thinks that Cotton and Violet were the ones that did the job, but no one has any proof. US Marshal Lloyd Richland comes into town in disguise to find the truth and he finds that the sheriff is corrupt and that the Goss family is gosh darn nice. They take in Richland and a stranded woman named Mary without any questions. Cotton believes that Sheriff Tatum shot their pa in the back, and the sheriff is now trying to plug the boys. Richland is looking for the train robbers, and at the same time is keeping an eye on Tatum and the lovely young Mary.
