밀수를 일삼는 용병 대니 아처(레오나르도 디카프리오)는 다이아몬드 광산에서 강제노역을 하던 솔로몬(디몬 하운수)이 유래 없이 크고 희귀한 다이아몬드를 발견해 숨기고 있다는 사실을 알게 된다. 아처는 그 다이아몬드가 아프리카에서 벗어날 기회임을 알고 그에게 접근하지만, 이 다이아몬드는 소년병으로 끌려간 솔로몬의 아들을 구하기 위한 것. 매디 보웬(제니퍼 코넬리)은 다이아몬드 산업의 부패를 폭로하고 숨겨진 진실을 밝히려고 하는 이상주의적 기자. 매디는 정보를 얻기 위해 아처를 찾지만 이내 그가 자신을 더 필요로 한다는 것을 알게 된다. 아처는 매디의 도움으로 솔로몬과 함께 반란 세력의 영토를 통과하기로 결정한다.

2005년 르완다 내의 한 학교에서 선생직을 맡고 있는 어거스틴은 동생의 전범 재판에 참석을 앞두고 과거를 회상한다. 1994년 4월 르완다에 후투족 형제 어거스틴과 호노레가 살고 있었다. 어거스틴은 정부군인으로 투치족 여성과 결혼 하여 아들과 딸을 낳고 살고 있으며 그의 형제 호노레는 반투치 정치성향의 라디오 방송으로 인기를 얻는 방송인이었다. 4월 6일 대통령 암살후 후투족과 투치족은 전쟁을 시작하였고 어거스틴은 투치족인 아내와 아이들을 피신시킨채 정부군으로서 전쟁에 참여한다. 허나 차마 이웃들과 친구들을 죽일 수 없던 그는 될 수 있는 한 그들을 살려주려 하였으나 내전이라는 소용돌이 속에 그것은 만만치 않은 일이었다. 그의 형제 호노레 역시 직접적으로 남을 해하지 않았고 오히려 살리려 노력하였으나 전쟁직전 그의 정치적 성향 때문에 내전이후 전범으로 몰려 감옥에 들어간다. 전쟁중 부인과 아이들, 친한 친구들이 죽은 어거스틴이 전범으로 몰린 형제의 재판에서 본 것은 형제를 전범으로 몰아세우는 내전기간에는 모른척했던 서양 열강 출신의 재판자들과 호노레를 옹호하는 투치족 출신의 변호인들이다.

In April 1994, the middle-aged Canadian journalist Bernard Valcourt is making a documentary in Kigali about AIDS. He secretly falls in love for the Tutsi waitress of his hotel Gentille, who is younger than him, in a period of violent racial conflicts. When the genocide of the Tutsis by the Hutus in Rwanda begins, Bernard does not succeed in escaping with Gentille to Canada. When the genocide finishes in July 1994, Bernard returns to the chaotic Kigali seeking out Gentille in the middle of destruction and dead bodies.
