Shin'ichi Ichikawa

때는 난세인 무로마치(室町) 말기. 남부럽지 않은 명문 하타케야마(畠山) 가문의 차남 나오미츠(直光, 오구리 슌)에서 태어났지만 대도적 타조마루(多襄丸)라는 이름을 가지게 된 남자. 그런 나오미츠에게는 원래 장래를 약속한 소꼽동무 아코희메(阿古姬, 시바모토 유키)가 있었다. 그런데 아코희메의 아버지 다이나곤(大納言)이 갑자기 세상을 떠났을 때 8대 쇼군인 아시카가 요시마사(足利義政, 하기와라 켄이치)가 내뱉은 한 마디가 두 사람의 운명을 크게 바꿔놓는다. 그것은 하타케야마 가문의 형제 중에서 아코희메를 손에 넣은 자가 관령직(管領職)을 물려받게 된다는 것이었다. 이로써 당연히 자신이 가문을 이을 것이라 생각했던 노부츠나(信綱, 이케우치 히로유키)는 크게 동요해 아코희메를 강제로 손에 넣을 계책을 세우고 이에 나오미츠는 아코희메를 위해 모든 것을 버리기로 결심하고 아코희메와 산으로 도망치는데 바로 그 때 오래 전 그 목숨을 구해준 이후 동생처럼 아꼈던 신하 사쿠라마루(桜丸, 다나카 케이)의 배신과 맞딱뜨린다. 피를 나눈 형, 자신이 너무나 사랑했던 신하, 그리고 마음 깊숙히 사랑했던 여자…. 누구보다 믿었던 자들의 배신으로 완전히 변해버린 인생. 그러나 모든 것을 잃고 빠졌던 절망의 늪에서 생각지도 못한 단단한 우정을 발견했다. 신뢰과 불신이 완전히 역전되어 보여지는 순간 그 모든 것이 다시 흔들리기 시작했다. 타조마루에게 일어난 모든 일에는 내막이 있었고 그 내막을 통해 바라보면 하나의 사건이 완전히 다르게 보인다. 엎치락 뒤치락 뒤바뀌는 상황. 완전히 뒤집힌 배신과 신뢰. 보여지 않는 진실에 우롱당하는 타조마루가 마지막으로 도달한 곳은….

A successful illustrator, Hinohara Takehiro, lives a happy life with his wife Toshiko, who has supported him all these years since the early struggling days, and their two sons. Feeling unwell, Toshiko has a check up one day and is told, out of the blue, that her days are numbered. When Toshiko is allowed out of the hospital temporarily, Takehiro and Toshiko travel to Hamakaze station. The town has changed a great deal in 18 years, however, the apartment where they started their married life is still there. People and scenery they used to cherish and the invaluable memories come vividly through. Starting at the place where their life as a couple began, the two prepare for "the day" while cherishing their remaining time. During the Bon festival, when the spirits of the deceased are believed to return to the living, Takehiro takes his sons to the firework display at Hamakaze and see the smiling face of Toshiko.

Takayuki Iwabuchi (Koji Yakusho), a former yakuza member with a tattoo of Kisshoten on his back. Although he has a criminal record, he is currently working as a driver at a hearse transportation company. One day, a young man visits the company and asks Takayuki to transport the body of his fiancé, Sawa (Shinobu Terajima), who had unexpectedly passed away, to her hometown in a rural area of Takamatsu, Shikoku. Takayuki decides to go to Shikoku with the young man, However, the man disappears when leaving to take a call while they are stopped at a rest area near Setoo Bridge. Left alone, Takayuki arrives at Sawa's home village after much searching. He then tells Sawa's bereaved family about the situation at her parents' house. There, he learns of the tradition of posthumous marriage, or 'Yukon', from the village elder...
