베이징 거리의 사람들, 가뭄에 속타는 농부, 사라지는 공장의 노동자, 화려하게 치장된 해변의 관광객, 지진 피해를 복구 중인 건설노동자, 그물을 수선하는 어부, 무대에 오를 채비를 마친 무용수... 중국 독립영화를 대표하는 감독 왕샤오슈아이가 그리는 현대 중국의 초상. (2018년 제23회 부산국제영화제) 격변기 중국의 인물과 공간을 담은 작품. 영화는 중국 전역을 다니면서 공간의 한순간을 잠시 주목한다. 광산촌, 어촌, 도시 공장, 건설 현장, 농촌, 학교, 병원 등의 다양한 공간에서 광부, 노동자, 어부, 농부, 병자, 학생 등 다양한 인물을 포착한다. 영화는 개발이 대성황을 이루던 때 그 이면 속 인물과 공간을 가만히 비춘다. 그러다 공간 속 인물 중 한 명과 조용히 눈을 마주치며 무언의 교감을 시도한다. 때로는 그가 감독 자신이기도 하다. 마치 아우구스투 잔더의 사진처럼, 영화는 사진의 정적인 리듬과 영화의 동적인 리듬을 감각적으로 품으면서 공간의 사람들, 특히 서민들을 담아낸다. 영화는 공간 속 인물을 파편적인 조각들로 수집해 중국 사회의 단면을 총체적으로 보여준다. 조각을 맞추다 보면, 그 조각들이 모여 동시대 중국 사회 그 자체로 마주하게 한다. 국내에서는 로 유명한 왕샤오슈아이 감독의 최신작이다. 은 강한 내러티브를 벗어나 영화와 사진과 미술 영상의 경계를 가로지른다. 중국 6세대 감독을 대표하는 왕샤오슈아이의 2014년 신작이다. 중국 사회의 일상 속에 드리워진 역사와 사회현실의 어두운 그늘을 사실주의 풍격으로 파헤친 수작이다. 라오덩은 늙은 모친과 두 아들, 그리고 손자까지 억척스럽게 돌보는 완고한 성격의 70대 과부이다. 큰 아들과 며느리, 그리고 동성애자인 작은 아들은 지나치게 자신들을 돌보는 라오덩이 부담스럽다. 어느 날 라오덩의 집에 대답 없는 괴상한 전화가 걸려오면서 평온한 일상이 깨지기 시작한다. 라오덩은 불안감 속에 자신이 살아온 세월을 되돌아 보게 되고, 문득 40년전 문화대혁명 시기 구이저우의 산골 공장에서 자신이 저지른 과오를 기억해 낸다. 어느 날, 한 소년이 라오덩을 찾아오고, 숨겨둔 40년전의 어두운 과거가 현실로 되살아온다. 영화는 70대 라오덩의 일상을 보여주거나, 혹은 그의 시선을 따라가는 이중적 시점을 통해 평범한 일상에 스며든 중국 현대사의 어두운 진실과 상처를 보여준다. 망각하지 않는 역사는 항상 현실이다. The unique feature of his film is the actors - they are not professional but celebrities on micro-blogs. Among micro-bloggers in the cast are publisher Zhang Lixian, folk singer Zhou Yunpeng and screenwriter Shi Hang. The film is based on the true story of a Beijing plainclothes policeman named Zhang Huiling, who has been working for more than 10 years in Shuangyushu, a community of Haidian District, Beijing. It depicts the stories of ordinary Chinese people struggling in the metropolis.

Xiaoma, a young woman who has recently moved to Beijing, finds an apartment in an old courtyard apartment complex owned by Grandma, an elderly woman. Xiaoma and Grandma’s relationship almost immediately becomes strained. After trying to tidy up the courtyard, Grandma insists that Xiaoma turn over her share of the profits. Tightfisted, the elderly landlady resists even allowing Xiaoma to install a telephone. At the same time the older woman becomes increasingly interested in Xiaoma’s personal (and romantic) life. Grandma, for example, tries to pass off her grandson to the younger woman. Annoyed, Xiaoma nevertheless is flattered at the older woman’s concern. Over the course of four seasons, Xiaoma begins to learn from her landlady of the old world that the modern city of Beijing has left behind, while Grandma begins to enjoy the youth and vitality of her tenant. The two women become closer and eventually develop a deep friendship.

A Chinese national, he stowed away on a boat to the United States, where he worked as a dishwasher in the restaurant of a family from his hometown back in Fujian province. After two years in the States and after fathering an illegitimate child there named Fusheng, the child's mother Xuhui who is the restaurateur's daughter, he was deported back to China. Since, he has been floundering in life, which has caused a rift between himself and his older brother, who, with his wife, operate a street front diner and can't have children of their own. Xiao Dou is a shy and naive mailworker living in Beijing with his sister. When a coworker is fired for reading people's correspondences Xiao Dou takes over the same mail route. He soon finds himself indulging in the same curiosity, eventually developing an obsession. Xiao Dou chooses to spend time reading letters instead of socializing with friends or coworkers. As he becomes increasingly tied to the letters, he begins to intervene in the lives of those who write and receive the letters.

북경 시내의 해질 녘, 경극 악기 소리가 울려 퍼지며 "18나한 손오공과 싸우다"가 언제나처럼 공연된다. 극장에서 살아가는 관리인 '한'은 40년되는 오늘을 마지막으로 퇴직을 맞이한다. 다음날, 죽은 아내의 사진과 약간의 짐을 들고 거리로 나선 그는 정박아 '하밍'을 만나 친해지고, 그에게 이끌려 공원에 간다. 공원에는 자신과 동년배의 노인들이 경극을 즐기는 모습이 보인다. 사람들을 헤치고 들어가 보니 국가간부였던 '호안 웬제'가 여자의 목소리로 연기하는 것이 보인다. 노인들은 자신들이 좋아하는 경극을 무대에서 공연하기 위해 적당한 장소를 물색하게 되는데, 이러한 준비에 있어서 '한'보다 적임자는 없어 보인다. 그러나 '한'은 이들의 아마추어적인 속성을 이해하지 못했고, 경극을 취미로 생각하는 그들을 인정사정 없이 혹독하게 훈련시킨다. 그러나 이러한 혹독한 훈련에도 불구하고 축제날 '예술대회'에 출전했다가 낙선한 것을 계기로 '한'은 점차 고립되게 된다. 게다가 그들이 빌린 연습장소가 곧 철거된다는 사실을 알게되면서 상황은 극도로 악화되고 만다. 노인들은 이사를 시작하지만 사소한 것으로 한과 '한 샨슈이'가 큰 싸움을 벌이고, 그 결과 한이 극단을 떠나게 된다. 그러나 거리를 걷기 시작한 '한'이 향하는 곳은 다른 노인들이 있는 곳이었다.

Lixin is in love with Zhuzhu, a mediocre dancer working in a government-sponsored dance troupe that frequently tours China's remote villages. Zhuzhu decides to give up dancing to study abroad while Lixin stays behind. Meanwhile, Zhuzhu's friend Haiying quickly moves in to offer him comfort and love. Soon afterward, Haiying tries to convince him to accompany her to San Francisco and begin working with her uncle there. As they are just about to board the plane, Lixin spies Zhuzhu in the crowd and refuses to board the plane. Because they've said their goodbyes to family and friends, Lixin and Haiying find themselves hiding in a rented farmhouse outside the city, pretending to be abroad. Lixin spends most of his time asleep, and this infuriates Haiying, who decides to leave. In the end Lixin encounters his beloved Zhuzhu.
